Great challenging walk to the Old Man of Coniston summit by Goat’s water. Dog friendly.

It had been a while since I wanted to bring Matthieu to visit Lake District. Indeed I have been there 4-5 times, more in the North of the lakes, for my work and I saw the beauty of this region but Matthieu had not had the opportunity to visit this place in England. So for this long weekend at the end of April we decided to go to the Lakes. We spent the first day visiting the Arnside area and chose the hike around the Old Man for the second day.

Cela faisait un moment que j’avais envie d’amener Matthieu visiter le Lake District. En effet moi j’y suis déjà allé 4-5 fois, plus dans le Nord des lacs, pour mon travail et j’ai ainsi vu la beauté de cette région mais Matthieu lui n’avait pas eu l’opportunité de visiter cet endroit de l’Angleterre. Donc pour ce long weekend fin Avril nous avons décidé d’aller faire un tour dans les Lakes. Nous avons passés la première journée à visiter la région d’Arnside  et avons choisi la randonnée autour du Old Man pour ce deuxième jour.

Coniston is a small village on the edge of Coniston Water which is the third largest lake in Lake District. It is possible to take an excursion on the lake with the oldest steamboat in the North of England. But Coniston is best known for the Old Man Peak (803 m) which is the highest point in Lancashire. At the national level, the Old Man is the twelfth highest peak in England.

Coniston est un petit village en bordure de Coniston Water qui est le troisième plus grand lac de Lake District. Il est possible de faire une excursion sur le lac dans le plus vieux bateau à vapeur du Nord de l’Angleterre. Mais Coniston est surtout connue pour le pic du Old Man (803 m) qui est le plus haut point dans le département du Lancashire. Au niveau national, the Old Man est le douzième plus haut sommet en Angleterre.

Here are the key steps to do this hike:

Voici les étapes clés pour réaliser cette randonnée:

• From the parking, turn left onto B5285. Then go up the village to the bridge. Cross the bridge and turn right. Arrived at a first fork turn left (do not follow the Old Man sign). Then turn right at the second fork. The path begins to climb through a forest.
• Continue on this road for a while until arriving at a gate and a parking behind the gate. Pass it and cross the parking using the path that runs across from the gate. Follow this stony path for about 2 km from the gate before arriving to a grassy path that climbs to the top (never follow the Old Man direction). Take this path and follow it. It will take you directly to the top of the Old Man by passing by a small lake.
• Arriving at the top of the Old Man take the path that goes down by the opposite side of the one you arrived. Follow the path until arriving at a fork (after passing a lake on your left). At the fork take the road in front of you (there is a path to the right, one to the left and one to the middle).
• Go down this road along the river, you will arrive directly in the village of Coniston.

• Départ du parking, prendre à gauche sur la B5285. Puis remonter le village jusqu’au pont. Traverser le pont et prendre à droite. Arrivé à une première intersection prendre à gauche (ne pas suivre le panneau Old Man). Puis à droite à la deuxième intersection. Le chemin commence à monter à travers une forêt.
• Continuer sur cette route pendant un bon moment jusqu’à arriver à un portail et un parking derrière le portail. Le passer et traverser le parking en utilisant le chemin qui part d’en face le portail. Suivre ce chemin en cailloux pendant environ 2 km depuis le portail avant d’arriver vers un chemin en herbe qui monte vers le sommet (ne jamais suivre la direction du Old Man). Prendre ce chemin et le suivre. Il va vous amener directement en haut du Old man en passant à côté d’un petit lac.
• Arrivé en haut du Old Man prenez le chemin qui redescend par le côté opposé de celui dont vous êtes arrivé. Suivre le chemin jusqu’à arriver à une intersection (après avoir passé un lac sur votre gauche). A l’intersection prendre le chemin le plus en face de vous (il y a un chemin vers la droite, un vers la gauche et un au milieu).
• Redescendre ce chemin en longeant la rivière, vous allez arriver directement dans le village de Coniston.
