Dans cet article, j’ai choisi de parler de mon année d’étude en Erasmus. Cette incroyable opportunité que nous offre les études universitaires ne doit pas être ignorée par les étudiants. Il s’agit vraiment d’une aubaine qui permet de voyager et d’étudier à l’étranger à moindre coût.

Personnellement, je n’ai pas forcément choisi où j’allais partir. J’ai fait plusieurs vœux comprenant des universités situées en Angleterre ainsi que l’université d’Helsinki en Finlande. La sélection est basée sur dossier et le mien n’était malheureusement pas assez bon pour obtenir une place en Angleterre. La sélection peut être assez rude dans certaines universités alors il est parfois judicieux de demander en premier choix des destinations qui ne sont pas forcément priorisées par tous les étudiants. J’ai donc obtenu une place à l’université d’Helsinki et je suis parti vivre 1 an au pays du Père Noël.

Pour être honnête, je n’étais pas forcément très rassuré quelques jours avant le départ, ni en arrivant en Finlande d’ailleurs. Je ne parlais pratiquement pas anglais, encore moins finlandais. Mon voyage a commencé dans un logement d’urgence où je dormais sur le sol couvert de quelques vêtements. J’ai passé environ 3 semaines dans cet hébergement d’urgence avant de pouvoir emménager dans un appartement étudiant. Le confort de mon appartement était rudimentaire et je devais le partager avec mon colocataire Davide qui venait de Sicile. Je n’avais pas de chambre à moi car l’appartement était un studio. Heureusement, nous sommes bien entendus et avons respecté l’intimité de chacun. Cependant, si vous aimez votre solitude, je vous conseille de demander une chambre individuelle sans quoi la salle de bain sera la seule pièce où vous pourrez réellement vous isoler.

J’ai commencé les cours très tôt après mon arrivée et cela n’a pas été une promenade de santé. Tous les cours ainsi que les examens étaient en anglais. Mon anglais étant très approximatif à l’époque, je dois avouer que j’ai dû énormément travailler pour valider les 60 crédit requis en 1O mois. En tout, j’ai passé une peu plus de dix examens écrits et oraux et je ne remercierais jamais assez toutes les personnes qui m’ont aidés à réussir mes examens et permis d’avoir mon année.

Durant cette année, j’ai aussi découvert un magnifique pays. Helsinki n’est pas la plus belle des capitales européennes mais les Finlandais sont très accueillants et toujours près à rendre service si vous êtes perdu par exemple. Si vous souhaitez visiter la Finlande, je vous conseille de ne passer qu’un jour ou deux dans la capitale, de louer une voiture et de partir en road trip vers le nord. La Finlande est recouverte à 70% par d’immenses forêts ainsi que des milliers de lacs. Les familles finlandaises possèdent bien souvent des chalets ou cottages comme maison de vacances. Ces chalets sont la plupart du temps situés près d’un lac et perdus au milieu d’une forêt. Ce sont de parfaits lieux de villégiatures en été comme en hiver.

Enfin, le plus important au cours d’un voyage Erasmus, c’est de se faire des amis. Pour cela, j’ai été gâté. J’ai rencontré des tas de gens sympas et je me suis fais des amis venant de tous les horizons. Le fait de voyager et d’échanger avec les autres étudiants à changer ma façon de penser. Mon anglais est passé de très pauvre à plutôt pas mal. En outre, je pense que c’est peut-être la raison pour laquelle je travaille maintenant à l’étranger et que je n’ai pas eu peur de repartir quand l’occasion s’est présentée.

In this article, I wanted to talk about my year at the University of Helsinki with the Erasmus program. The students should not ignore this incredible opportunity offered by European universities. It is really a chance to travel and study abroad at a low cost.

Personally, I did not choose where I was going. I made several vows including universities in England as well as the University of Helsinki in Finland. The selection is based upon the student’s record and mine was unfortunately not good enough to get a place in England. The selection can be quite rough in some universities so it is sometimes wise to ask for first choice destinations that are not necessarily prioritised by all students. So I got a place at the University of Helsinki and I left to live a year in Santa Claus’ country.

To be honest, I was not very confident a few days before my departure, nor when I arrived in Finland. I hardly spoke English, neither Finnish. My journey started in an emergency housing where I slept on the floor covered with some clothes. I spent about 3 weeks in this emergency accommodation before I could move into a student apartment. The comfort of my apartment was rudimentary and I had to share it with my roommate Davide who came from Sicily. I did not have a bedroom for myself because the apartment was a studio. Fortunately, we got along well and respected the privacy of each other. However, if you want some privacy, I advise you to ask for a private room or expect to spend a lot of time in the bathroom, the only room where you can actually find some peace. 

I started the classes very early after my arrival and it was not easy. All lectures and exams were in English. My English being very poor at that time, I must admit that I had to work hard to validate the 60 academic credit required in 10 months. Overall, I passed around ten written and oral exams and I would never thank enough all the people who helped me to pass my exams and allowed me to be successful.

During this year, I also discovered a beautiful country. Helsinki is not the most beautiful capital in Europe but the Finnish people are very welcoming and always ready to help if you are lost for example. If you want to visit Finland, I recommend spending only a day or two in the capital, rent a car and go on a road trip toward the north. Finland is covered at 70% by huge forests and has thousands lakes. Finnish families often have chalets or cottages as holiday homes. These chalets are mostly located near a lake and lost in the middle of a forest. These are perfect summer and winter holiday resorts.

Finally, the most important thing during an Erasmus trip is to make friends. For that, I was lucky. I met a lot of nice people; I made friends from all around the world. Traveling and exchanging with other students changed my way of thinking. My English has gone from very poor to pretty good. Furthermore, I think that it might be the reason why I now work abroad and I was not afraid to leave France when the opportunity presented itself.
