Beginning on February, we decided to do a weekend in Manchester, in particular Salford Quays, to visit our friends. One of my colleague offered us to keep Skye for the weekend so on the Saturday morning Matt, Marcus and I drove down the M6 to Salford Quays. We arrived for lunch time and went directly to our friends flat. After lunch, the weather was not great but we still decided to walk to Salford Quays and around Media City passing in front of the Imperial War Museum.

We used to live in Salford Quays when we were in Manchester. Actually our first flat 10 years ago was in the BBC tower and then we moved to Exchange Quays on the edge of Salford Quays. So we know well the area but since we left to live in Cumbria 7 years ago, a lot of things has changed in Salford Quays. I would say a lot more flat towers have appeared. It is still a nice area and Eunice recently wrote some great blog posts about it. For us that day it was a quick stroll before heading back to our friend for some warm tea and catch-up discussion.

For the night we had booked a room at the Hilton Garden Inn hotel on the ground of the Old Trafford Cricket Stadium. We were lucky as they gave us a room on the highest floor and further end of the building. The room had a king size bed for us, a sofa bed for Marcus and it had a balcony with view on the cricket pitch. We all had a great resting night and enjoyed a generous breakfast. Definitely we recommend that hotel and we would book again next time we visit our friends (except if it is during a cricket game as the room will be too expensive).

On the Sunday morning, we went to the Trafford Shopping Centre for a small walk around the shops before heading to the Sea Life Aquarium. We actually arrived before the shops opened but the building is so beautiful with its rich architecture and fountains that it was still nice to show everything to Marcus.

We had booked the 10h50 session at the aquarium to visit it with our friends and fortunately I had booked as everything was full. The visit started with an introduction about turtles life before going into the main area of the aquarium. The aquarium is designed as a long corridor with small rooms on each side. Each water tank has different fish species and there is even a glassed tunnel where we could admire the fishes, little sharks and turtles swimming above us. There is a great play area for children in it and it took us around 1h to visit it. Overall, we enjoyed the visit, however we found that it was missing big fishes to see. It didn’t have any big pools or water tanks but mainly small ones and only had one turtle. It was as well expensive. Matt and I thought that the aquarium in Maryport near us is actually better value for money.

I’ve only driven past Salford Quays so I’m not really equipped to judge, but it sounds like you had a nice family day out, Melodie.

It sounds like you had a good weekend away. I’ve been to the Trafford Centre a few times but not to Sea Life – to be honest though, compared to my experience of diving with sharks in the Cape Town aquarium this sounds a bit tame.

It was nice thanks Eunice. I can imagine that diving in Cape town was an amazing experience. I have visited other aquariums in France and Australie that were a lot better than this one.

Sounds like a nice weekend. We have visited Sea Life in Queensferry many years ago, I think when my nieces were small (they are now in their late 20s!) What a big boy Marcus is getting! Time flies.

I like the mermaids by the fountain. Is that in the Trafford centre? I haven’t been to a sea life centre in years. X

Such a lovely weekend away! Aquariums are so expensive, our youngest loves fish but it’s an expensive day out to travel to our nearest aquarium and then the entry fees on top! Maryport is definitely great value, it’s a shame it isn’t nearer to us 😊

Some of them are expensive indeed, it is such a shame but it is a nice treat for the family.

I love the mermaid fountain! How lovely to take your little one to a place that you have good memories of. Great view from the hotel room too!

The hotel was really good in particular the view from the balcony. It was nice to show him Trafford Centre, it is such a nice place.

I’ve always wanted to visit Manchester as the city can be easily reached by a 50-minute flight from Dublin, but somehow, it hasn’t happened yet. Visiting Sea Life Manchester Aquarium sounds like a fun activity. Thanks for sharing, and have a wonderful day 🙂 Aiva xx
