During our childhood, we often watched a TV show called Fort Boyard. This show created in 1990 was filmed in the stronghold of the same name which is situated offshore of Fouras-les-bains town in Charente Maritime county. In the show, a team or several small ones needed to win some physicals and intellectuals games to access to a treasure. This show is very famous in France and watched by a lot of families.

As we were visiting that county during our summer holidays, we decided to do a boat trip to see the stronghold. There are several companies that offer boat trips to see Fort Boyard. We opted for the company Croisières Alizé which are dog friendly and selected their trip that goes around Fort Boyard passing by Aix Island. This trip is around 1h long which was perfect for us.

We started the day by a short stop at Fort Vauban, which is situated in the town of Fouras-les-bains. This stronghold belonging to the Lords of Rochefort, served as tollgate for the boat that wanted to access the Charente river. We only walked on the ramparts (free) to admire the view but it is possible to visit the interior of the stronghold (fees apply).

Then we took the direction of la Pointe de la Fumée to do our boat trip. Skye wasn’t really reassured to go on the boat but he finally calm down and stayed seated between by legs. There was a labrador by our side who didn’t seem bothered to be on a boat. Marcus as well wasn’t really reassured with the noise of the boat and the people.

The boat left the harbour and took the direction of Fort Boyard passing by the shore of Aix Island. It is possible to visit Aix Island by bike or on foot. This small island of 3km long by 0.6 km wide is occupied by around 250 inhabitants and even contains a cinema, a school, a town hall, four museums and of course a stronghold – Fort Liédot. Aix Island is quite touristic during summer months.

So the boat took us around Fort Boyard which is unfortunately not accessible to the public. Its construction was performed in several phases and finished in 1857 when Napoléon ordered to complete it. The stronghold aimed to protect the islands of Aix and Oléron but was fast abandoned. Then from 1870 to 1913 it was used as a military jail. It became a historic monument in 1950 and started to be used for film production. It was only in 1990 and the TV show that this stronghold became famous in France.

After slowly going around the stronghold, the boat took the direction of Fouras town by this time following the other side of Aix Island. The weather was very hot and we enjoyed that boat trip. The duration was perfect for us as Marcus and Skye started to find it long.

I don’t know the area at all, Melodie, but a boat trip on a hot day is usually good news.

It looks quite imposing and I don’t think I would have liked to have been in prison there!

Yep definitely not a nice place to be in prison especially during stormy winter. It must have been terrifying.

Looks great – both the TV show and the fort were unknown to me.

The area is very nice to visit with a lot of Forts to visit. A nice area to spend time if you visit that part of France.

The tv programme isn’t the sort of thing which really interests me so I only saw it a couple of times but I would have loved to be able to explore inside the old fort.

I haven’t fully followed the show but it was nice sometimes when they were showing a bit of the inside of the fort. Maybe one day they will open it to the public.

It was indeed. I guess it is only famous for a French person due to the TV show.

Looks like you had fabulous weather for your boat ride. It’s too bad that Fort Boyard isn’t accessible to the public. But it’s still neat to see it from the outside and learn more about its history.

We were very lucky with the weather the entire time we stay in France last summer. It was even too hot with some afternoon reaching 40°C. So we were looking for some fresh air and the boat trip was a great choice. It was interesting even though we couldn’t go in.

I think it would be fascinating to actually be able to tour the inside of the fort.

Yes it would. In the TV show we can see a bit of the inside and the room looks very dark with no light. It has a big courtyard in the middle.

Oh i have never heard of this show, but I’m fascinated by the building and your post. My boys love a show called
Abandoned Engineering, and it features buildings like this!

I think only French families know about this show. Definitely, a great building from an architectural point of view. Maybe one day you could do the boat trip if you go to France with your van.

It looks like you had a fun day out exploring forts. This one looks to be in an excellent state of preservation and I love how it butts up against a lovely little beach. It would be so much fun to walk around the walls and look at the view that the prisoners would have had as they were being loaded onboard the trans-Atlantic transport vessels. Thanks for sharing, and have a wonderful day 🙂 Aiva xx

I agree it is a shame that it is not open to the public but it is still nice to see it from the sea. Plenty of castles, forts and manors to visit in that part of France.
