A great walk starting from Dalegarth to discover the beauty of the river Esk. Perfect during summer as there are plenty of spots for wild swimming. Mostly dog-friendly but can have some sheep in the fields.

I am slowing finishing to write about the walks we did in 2023. This is one we did in June during the hot wave we had. That day, we wanted a walk by the water so we could go wild swimming and also for Skye to not suffer too much from the heat. The Esk river directly came to mind. We had done several walks around that area but not one following the river as such. So after a quick look at the paper map we plotted this one that look easy enough, with some shade to protect baby (who was 3 months) and doggy and where we could swim at some point.
Find our walk to Stanley Force waterfall on this page. If you are interested in wild swim in Tongue Pot it is on this page. If you prefer some a tarn walk Blea tarn might be the one.

We started from the little car park after Dalegarth campsite and went in the direction of Dalegarth Train station to find the path that joins the river. Following that path we arrive at Saint Catherine church, where we turned left to continue following the river Esk. This path was very nice, there were not a lot of access to the river but it was mainly in the shade. We continued straight until reaching Doctor Bridge, where Skye was able to play in the water.
After crossing the bridge, we took right to follow the other side of the river and walk back in the direction of the car park. After a couple of metres and passing Low Birker farm, we decided to detour to see Low Birker tarn. The sun was very high in the sky and there was no shade on this path so we started to feel hot but the views from that path were amazing. Unfortunately, there was no footpath going down Low Birker tarn and we could only see from above, so we turned around Tarn Crag to retrace our steps until the farm.

Once again at the farm, we use the path closer to the river Esk passing by Gill Force waterfall to reach the car park. After the walk, we went for a little wild swim by the bridge near Dalegarth campsite. There were plenty of local youngs jumping from the bridge into the water (a bit scary to be honest) and families sunbathing on the rocks and playing with children in the water.

Look at that expansive view, bliss. I remember a stone bridge similar to the one you have shown. We marvelled at how well constructed it was for it’s age. The dog was loving it 🙂

Skye looks like he was really enjoying himself in the river and that water is so clear. I’ve stayed a few times at the National Trust Campsite close to Boot village and visited that little church. It’s a beautiful area and your photos are lovely :)

He loves playing in the water but doesn’t want to swim. He doesn’t like when water goes higher than his belly 🤣. We love this area especially during summer.
