On December 1^st, the sun was out which was perfect for a hike. The day before we went walking to Seathwaite Tarn so for that Sunday we wanted to go to the Eskdale Valley. I also wanted a hike neither too long nor too hard and that’s how we decided to do this one. After picking up our friends on the way, we arrived at the car park around 9am. The sun was just beginning to come out and after having climbed the first summit to reach Blea Tarn, an absolutely clear view over the sea and the Isle of Man appeared while the valley below was still plunged into a winter atmosphere, with its thick layer of frost. The water of Blea Tarn was calm and the small summit behind it, reflected on the surface. Then, we continued across the valley towards the forest and there again magnificent views appeared to us at every turn of the trail. The forest seemed to be hibernating and only a few red holly berries contrasted with this grey / brown colour of trees without foliage and frozen. Next, was the climb to Brats Hill and Miterdale Head Moss with its intense orange colours and small stone circles lost at the top of the plateau. We ended the hike by saying hello to the passengers of the Ravenglass-Eskdale train.

Here are the key steps to do this hike:

-From the parking, turn right on the national road towards Beckfoot. At Beckfoot level cross the small railway and take the path that goes up the hill. Once at the top go right towards Blea Tarn.

-Pass Blea Tarn and take the path to the left that follows the wall, continue straight ahead then take a right path that passes between a rocky summit and the forest. Continue on this path until you see another path on the right (straight ahead is a private property). Take this path until you reach a path of pebbles, turn right until a larger road.

– Cross the road, the first branch of the river and then take a right on the path that goes through the forest. Continue straight on until you find yourself on another road. At the road level turn right and continue straight on until you reach the farm.

-At the bottom of the courtyard, turn right to continue until a small bridge. Cross the river then take across the fields for a while. After seeing a house by the river, take the path on the right that goes up. Once at the top, turn left and continue straight on this plateau until you reach some circles of stones. Continue on this path that turns and go down to the valley. At a junction take the direction of Boot and Eskdale Mill.

– Once in the village of Boot, turn right on the national road to return to the parking.

En ce 1^er Décembre le soleil était parmi nous et la journée s’annonçait parfaite pour une randonnée. La veille nous étions allés marcher vers Seathwaite tarn et nous avions donc envie pour celle-ci d’aller dans la vallée d’Eskdale. Je voulais également faire une randonnée ni trop longue ni trop dure et c’est ainsi que nous décidâmes de faire celle-ci. Après avoir récupéré nos amis en chemin, nous arrivâmes au parking vers 9h. Le soleil commençait à peine à sortir et après avoir gravi la première montée pour accéder à Blea Tarn, une vue absolument dégagée sur la mer et l’Isle of Man est apparue alors que la vallée en contre-bas était toujours plongée dans une atmosphère hivernale avec son épaisse couche de gel. L’eau de Blea Tarn était calme et le petit sommet derrière s’y reflétait. Puis nous continuâmes à travers la vallée en direction de la forêt et là encore de magnifiques vues s’offraient à nous à chaque tournant du sentier. La forêt avait l’air d’hiberner et seules quelques baies de houx rouges contrastaient avec ce gris/marron des arbres sans feuillages et gelés. Vient ensuite la montée vers Brats Hill et Miterdale Head Moss avec ses couleurs orange intenses et les petits cercles de pierre perdus en haut du plateau. Nous finîmes la randonnée en faisant un coucou aux passagers du petit train Ravenglass- Eskdale.

Voici les étapes clés pour faire cette randonnée :

-Depuis le parking, tourner à droite sur la nationale en direction de Beckfoot. Au niveau de Beckfoot traverser la petite voie ferrer et prendre le sentier qui monte en haut de la colline. Une fois en haut vers la droite en direction de Blea Tarn.

-Passer Blea Tarn et prendre le sentier vers la gauche qui suit le mur, continuer toujours tout droit puis prendre à droite le sentier qui passe entre les rochers et la forêt. Continuer sur ce sentier jusqu’à voir un autre sentier sur la droite (tout droit c’est une propriété privée). Prendre ce sentier jusqu’à arriver sur un chemin de cailloux, prendre à droite jusqu’à une route plus grande.

-Traverser la route, la première branche de la rivière puis prendre directement à droite sur le sentier qui part à travers la forêt. Continuer toujours tout droit jusqu’à se retrouver sur une autre route. Au niveau de la route prendre à droite puis continuer toujours tout droit jusqu’à la ferme.

-Au fond de la cour, prendre à droite continuer jusqu’à voir un petit pont. Traverser la rivière puis prendre à travers champs pendant un moment. Après avoir vu une maison en contre-bas de la rivière, prendre le sentier sur la droite qui monte. Une fois en haut prendre à gauche et continuer toujours tout droit sur ce plateau jusqu’à arriver vers des cercles de pierres. Continuer sur ce sentier qui tourne et redescend vers la vallée. A un embranchement de sentier prendre la direction de Boot et du Mill.

-Une fois au village de Boot, prendre à droite sur la nationale pour retourner vers le parking.
