Visit of the Mull of Galloway and the Logan Garden – Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland

A great road trip to visit Mull of Galloway and the beautiful Logan Botanic Garden in Dumfries and Galloway.

This year again for this August bank holiday weekend we have decided to go to Scotland. Last year we went hiking in the Trossachs national park. This year we opted for a road trip in the South West of Scotland in the counties of Dumfries and Galloway and Ayrshire.

Find all our walks in the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park in Scotland on this page.

We started our road trip by following the coast from Dumfries to Mull of Galloway. Starting from our home in Cumbria, it took us around 4 hours to reach Mull of Galloway with a short stop for a brunch at The Old School House tearoom on the A75. We wanted to go through the town of Wigtown also nicknamed “The Scottish Book town” because of its number of second-hand book shops but unfortunately, we didn’t have time and decided to postpone this visit until next time. The road to the Mull of Galloway is very beautiful and offers multiple views of the Solway coast. It got smaller and smaller the closer we got to our destination.

We arrived at the Mull of Galloway car park around 12:30 pm and a lot of people have had the same idea because the parking was full. After a short wait we were able to park our car and set off to explore this magnificent place.

Mull of Galloway, located on the Rhins of Galloway peninsula, is Scotland’s most southerly point. There is a magnificent lighthouse that overlooks the bay (unfortunately closed to visitors due to the Corona virus) and a huge foghorn to see. But it is above all the 360 ° view that is breathtaking. On a clear day it is possible to see the coasts of Cumbria, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man. There is also an RSPB centre as the area is designated as Site of Special Scientific Interest. There are lots of birds that come to nest and lay on the cliffs of the peninsula and it is sometimes possible to see dolphins and porpoises. Unfortunately, we didn’t have the chance to see any that day.

Following this visit, we went to discover the Logan Botanic Garden. This botanical garden is part of the family of the Royal Botanic Gardens of Scotland with the one in Edinburgh. Due to the climatic conditions of the region, the garden contains species native of Central and South America, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. The garden is splendid and so peaceful that we would have stayed there for hours. But it was time for us to head to our B&B.

Information about the Logan Botanic Garden can be found here.
