The other night, because the weather was nice we decided with Matthieu to go walking around Loweswater lake. From my office it only takes 20 minutes by car to get there, which is perfect for a small hike after work. It’s the advantage of living in the countryside.

Loweswater is one of the smallest lakes in the Lake District area. It is located in the Lorton Valley near Crummock Lake. This lake is one of its kind because the water flows toward the centre of the Lake District and to Crummock Lake instead of going to the sea. The lake now belongs to the National Trust which protects it but also offers boats to rent to navigate in the lake. There is also a small hut that can be rented for the weekend. It is also possible to swim in the lake, we saw a group of people enjoying its clear waters and probably freezing. After seeing them, we decided to go back another day and to introduce ourselves to the joys of outdoor swimming.

But for this first visit we just walk around the lake. It takes about 1h-1h30 to go around. The trail is flat all along and accessible to the whole family. The lake is in the hollow of the valley and offers magnificent views of the surrounding peaks. Loweswater is less popular than Crummock or Buttermere and so it allows to enjoy the tranquillity of the surroundings. The trail is clearly visible, and it is not difficult to follow it without a map.

This hike is perfect for a walk during the evening or for a family afternoon and why not a picnic and a swim in the lake.

L’autre soir, vu qu’il faisait beau nous avons eu envie avec Matthieu d’aller nous promener autour du lac Loweswater. Depuis mon bureau il ne faut que 20 min de voiture pour arriver à Loweswater ce qui est parfait pour une randonnée après le travail. C’est le bon côté de vivre à la campagne.

Loweswater est l’un des plus petits lacs de la région de Lake District. Il est situé dans la vallée de Lorton non loin du lac Crummock. Ce lac est unique en son genre car l’eau se déverse vers le centre de Lake District et notamment en direction du lac Crummock et non vers la mer. Le lac appartient maintenant au National Trust qui s’occupe de le protéger mais aussi propose des barques à la location pour naviguer dans le lac. Il y a également une petite hutte qu’il est possible de louer pour le weekend. Il est aussi possible de nager dans le lac, nous avons vu un groupe de gens profiter de ses eaux claires et surement glaciale. Après les avoir vu, nous avons décidé d’y retourner et de nous initier aux joies de la natation en plein air.

Mais pour cette première visite nous avons juste fait le tour du lac. Il faut compter environ 1h-1h30 pour en faire le tour. Le sentier est plat tout le long et accessible à toute la famille. Le lac est au creux de la vallée et offre de magnifiques vues sur les sommets environnants. Loweswater est beaucoup moins populaire que Crummock ou Buttermere et permet donc de profiter de la tranquillité des environs. Le sentier est bien visible et il n’est pas difficile de le suivre sans carte.

Cette randonnée est parfaite pour se promener le soir ou pour un après-midi en famille et pourquoi pas un pique-nique et une baignade en bordure du lac.
