Lors de notre voyage en Irlande, nous avons eu la bonne idée d’aller visiter le Middleton distillerie complexe située dans la ville de Middleton dans le comté de Cork. La distillerie de Middleton a été fondée en 1825 par les frères James, Daniel et Jeremiah Murphy. Cette distillerie produit l’un des whiskeys irlandais les plus célèbres au monde, le Jameson. Cependant, cette distillerie produit aussi d’autres alcools et d’autres whiskeys comme le Power, le Paddy, ou encore le Middleton.

Arrivée sur place, nous avons commencé par faire le tour des installations servant à la fermentation, à la distillation et au vieillissement. Les bâtiments sont ceux d’une ancienne manufacture transformée pendant un temps en caserne militaire. On ressent réellement que le site est chargé d’histoire. Les explications du guide sont détaillées et intéressantes. Il prenait également le temps de répondre aux questions. Nous avons apprécié la visite.

La particularité des whiskeys fabriqué par cette distillerie est qu’ils sont triplement distillés. Cela permet de produire des whiskeys très aromatiques. Le whiskey Jameson en est un très bon exemple. Je dirais qu’il a un goût fruité et épicé qui peut surprendre quand on a l’habitude des whiskies Ecossais qui sont bien souvent plus tourbés.

La visite de la distillerie c’est terminé par une dégustation qui n’était pas ouverte à tous. Certains d’entre nous ont été choisi par le guide pour goûter différent whiskeys et essayer de reconnaitre le whisky Jameson. Comme la Guinness, on peut dire que le whiskey Jameson est une fierté nationale. Il s’agit du whiskey le plus vendu au monde. J’ai eu la chance de participer à cette dégustation à l’aveugle. Cependant, j’ai légèrement agacé le guide quand il nous a demandé de choisir notre whisky préféré parmi ceux que nous avions goûté et que j’ai pointé le seul whisky écossais sur la table reconnaissable par son gout plus tourbé.

Un cocktail à base de whiskey a été offert à tous les participant à la fin de la visite. Mais je trouve dommage que sur un groupe d’environ 20 personnes seulement 8 personnes ont pu faire la dégustation.

Globalement, il s’agit d’une étape incontournable si vous visitez le sud de l’Irlande et avez la chance de traverser la jolie ville de Cork.

During our trip to Ireland we had the good idea to visit the Middleton Distillery Complex located in the town of Middleton in the county of Cork. The Middleton distillery was founded in 1825 by brothers James, Daniel and Jeremiah Murphy. This distillery produces one of the world’s most famous Irish whiskeys, the Jameson. However, this distillery also produces other spirits and other whiskeys such as Power, Paddy, or Middleton whiskeys.

Arriving on site, we began by visiting the facilities used for fermentation, distillation and aging steps. The buildings are those of an old factory transformed during a time in military barracks. We really feel that the site is full of history. The explanations given by the guide are detailed and interesting. He also took the time to answer questions. We enjoyed the tour.

The peculiarity of the whiskeys produced by this distillery is that they are triply distilled. This makes it possible to produce very aromatic whiskeys. The Jameson whiskey is a very good example. I would say it has a fruity and spicy taste that can surprise when you are used to Scottish whiskeys, which are often more peaty.

The visit of the distillery ended with a tasting that was not open to all. Some of us were chosen by the guide to taste different whiskeys and try to recognise the Jameson whiskey. Like Guinness, Jameson whiskey is a national pride. It is the most sold whiskey in the world. I had the chance to participate in this blind tasting. However, I slightly annoyed the guide when he asked us to choose our favourite whiskey among those we had tasted and that I pointed the only Scottish whiskey on the table recognisable thanks to its peaty taste.

A whiskey-based cocktail was offered to all participants at the end of the tour. But I didn’t like those on a group of about 20 people only 8 people were able to do the tasting.

Overall, this is a must-see if you are visiting Southern Ireland and have the chance to visit the beautiful city of Cork.
