Walk Uldale Plantation by Nannycatch gate – Cleator, Cumbria

A lovely moderate walk passing by the bottom of Uldale plantation, nannycatch gate and the side of Flat Fell summit. This little known walk is great for a sunday morning stroll.

Une randonnée assez facile qui passe par le bas de la forêt d’Uldale, nannycatch gate et le côté du sommet de Flat Fell. Cette randonnée peu connue est parfaite pour une promenade le dimanche matin.

Between bad weather, birthdays and other friends parties, we didn’t really have a lot of opportunities to go hiking in June. However, one sunday morning we had nothing planned and the weather wasn’t too bad so we decided to go somewhere local for a walk. Most of the time when we want to hike nearby our house, we go to Ennerdale lake. That morning I wanted some changes so I suggested to Matt to try the forest on the side of Dent summit. We did Dent summit a long time ago and just before having Marcus I did a walk with my colleagues in that area but since then we hadn’t been to that little forest and valley. It is crazy to be honest as it is on the way to Ennerdale but we never stop.

Entre le mauvais temps, les anniversaires et autres fêtes organisées par nos amis, nous n’avons pas vraiment eu d’opportunité pour aller randonner au mois de Juin. Mais un dimanche matin, nous n’avions rien de prévu et le temps n’était pas trop mauvais donc nous avons décidé d’aller faire une randonnée dans les environs. La plus part du temps quand nous voulons randonner près de la maison, nous allons au lac d’Ennerdale. Mais ce matin la, j’avais envie de changer. J’ai donc suggéré à Matt d’aller randonner dans la petite forêt à côté du sommet de Dent. Nous avions fait une randonnée jusqu’au sommet de Dent il y a un moment déjà et juste avant d’avoir Marcus j’avais fait une randonnée avec mes collègues dans les environs. Mais nous n’avions jamais été dans la forêt et la vallée. C’est d’ailleurs assez bizarre car c’est très proche de chez nous mais nous ne nous y arrêtons jamais en allant à Ennerdale.

We drove up to the little car park at the end of nannycatch road by the entrance of the forest. I had in mind to do the same walk as the one I did with my colleagues as Matt had never done it but I remembered that it was a bit too long. Instead we decided to walk on the forest track. We didn’t really have a plan in mind so we kept walking on this large forest track for a little while until Matt saw a path on the left going towards a little summit. Checking my map I saw that once at the summit there was another path that was going down and was joining the large path at the bottom of Uldale forest. So here we went.

Nous avons conduit jusqu’au petit parking à la fin de la route de Nannycatch et au niveau de l’entrée de la forêt. J’avais en tête de faire la même randonnée que j’avais fait avec mes collègues car Matt ne l’a pas faite mais je me suis rappelé qu’elle est un peu longue. Donc à la place nous avons décidé de prendre le sentier forestier. Nous n’avions pas vraiment de plan en tête et nous avons marché sur ce large sentier jusqu’à ce que Matt voit un petit sentier partir sur la gauche vers un petit sommet. J’ai donc regardé la carte sur laquelle j’ai vu qu’il y avait un sentier après le sommet et qu’il rejoignait un plus grand sentier en bas de la forêt d’Uldale. Nous voila donc parti sur ce sentier.

The summit was easy to reach but the path going down was very steep. Definitely not one to do when it is raining or in icy conditions. But it was short and soon we were again on a large track. This path passing at the bottom of Dent summit and Uldale forest is nice. The area feels very secluded and it is never too popular. We soon reach the famous nannycatch gate to enter another remote valley between the other side of Uldale forest and Flat fell summit. The scenery was lovely and we had some great views on the sea in the far distance. There were several sheep and cows along the path which distracted Marcus and allowed us to reach the car park without too much complaints from a tired toddler. Rain started as soon as we drove away. It was a short but still a great walk with lovely views. It was definitely what we needed that Sunday morning.

Le sommet était assez facile d’accès mais par contre le sentier descendait à pic. Je ne l’emprunterai pas sous la pluie ou quand il a gelé. Mais vu qu’il est assez court, nous sommes vite arrivés sur le gros sentier. Ce sentier qui passe par le bas du sommet de Dent et la forêt d’Uldale est très agréable. Le coin est assez isolé et peu touristique. Puis nous sommes arrivés au fameux portail de Nannycatch gate avant de rentrer dans une autre vallée entre le bas de la forêt d’Uldale et le sommet de Flat Fell. Le paysage était très beau et nous avions même la vue sur la mer au loin. Il y avait pleins de moutons et vaches proche du sentier ce qui a distrait Marcus pendant un moment et nous a permit de finir la randonnée sans qu’il ne se plaigne trop. La pluie tomba dès que nous partîmes. Cette randonnée est assez courte mais tout de même très agréable avec de belles vues. Parfaite pour un dimanche matin en famille.

      2. C’est sur qu’en famille c’est mieux les petites randonnées. Mais je dois dire que ça me manque un peu les longues randonnées de 5-6h. Un jour quand bébé sera plus grand nous en referons.
