Gorgeous walk to discover the beauty of île Madame off the coast of Port des Barques in Charente Maritime.

Comme je vous le disais dans mes articles précédents, nous sommes rentrés en France cet été pour les vacances et avons passés 10 jours en Charente Maritime. Nous en avons profité pour visiter un peu ce département mais je dois dire qu’il y a beaucoup de choses à voir. Un matin, nous avons décidé d’aller visiter la petite île Madame au large de Port des Barques.

As I was telling you in my previous blog posts, we went back to France this summer for our holiday and we spent 10 days in Charente Maritime. We took that opportunity to visit this county but I have to say that there are a lot of things to see. One morning, we decided to go visit the small island of île Madame off the coast of Port des barques.

J’avais la veille vérifié les horaires de la marée car cette île est accessible à pied à marée basse en empruntant la passe aux boeufs. Il est possible d’y aller aussi en voiture mais la traversée à pied est très agréable. Nous sommes arrivés sur le parking assez tôt car ils annonçaient très chaud ce jour la donc nous voulions visiter le matin et rentrer chez nous en début d’après midi avant la chaleur.

The night before, I had checked the tide times as this island is accessible on foot at low tide using the causeway “la passe aux boeufs”. It is also possible to cross with the car but the crossing on foot is lovely. We arrived on the car park, early morning as it was announcing to be very hot so we wanted to visit the morning and go back to the accommodation beginning of the afternoon to avoid the heat.

Depuis le parking nous avons emprunté le sentier de la passe aux boeufs. Vu que la marée n’était pas descendue depuis longtemps, les rochers étaient encore assez humide et l’air était chargé d’iode. Le soleil commençait à se lever et ses rayons se reflétaient doucement dans l’océan. Il y avait quelques crabes qui essayaient de rejoindre l’eau et des oiseaux qui déjeunaient des restes qu’avait laissé la marée.

From the car park, we took the causeway “La passe aux boeufs”. As the tide had only recently go down, the rocks were still humid and the air had that salty smell. The sun was starting to shine and its rays were reflecting gently in the ocean. There were some crabs that were trying to rejoin the water and some birds that were having breakfast with the leftovers left by the sea.

Une fois sur l’île nous avons pris à droite sur la route puis le sentier qui fait le tour de l’île. L’île Madame est un site naturel classé d’une superficie de 0,78 km2. L’île est habité (il y avait 11 personnes en 2022) et contient quelles maisons, un petit camping et une ferme ostréicole où il est possible de gouter les huîtres et acheter des produits locaux. Il est également possible de visiter le fort qui servait à protéger l’Arsenal de Rochefort.

Once on the island, we took right on the road and then the path that turn around the island. île Madame is a natural listed site with an area of 0.78km2. The island is inhabited (11 person in 2022) and contains some houses, a small campsite and an oyster farm where it is possible to try fresh oysters and buy some local products. It is also possible to visit the fort that served to protect Rochefort Arsenal.

Nous avons suivit le sentier côtier pour découvrir l’île et admirer l’embouchure de la Charente avec le golf de Gascogne. Il y avait pleins de points de vues où nous avons pu bien observer toute la beauté de cette île et les carrelets de pêcheurs. Malheureusement, il commençait vraiment à faire chaud, et il n’y avait pas d’ombres donc après un petit arrêt à la ferme où nous avons acheté du sel fait sur l’île, nous avons décidé de finir le tour de l’île et de repartir au logement pour profiter de la piscine.

We took the coastal path to discover the island and admire the mouth of the river Charente with the Bay of Biscay. There were several viewpoints where we could observe the beauty of this island and the fishermens’ houses “carrelets”. Unfortunately, it was starting to be really hot and there was no shade so we decided, after a short stop at the oyster farm where we bought some salt made on the island, to finish walking around the island and drive back to our accommodation to enjoy the swimming pool.

L’île est vraiment très belle et agréable à découvrir. L’atmosphère est si paisible; c’est un peu comme si le temps c’était arrêté. C’est un endroit parfait pour aller pêcher à pied en famille, pour prendre des photos et observer les oiseaux marins ou tout simplement pour prendre son temps et se reposer sur une de ses plages.

The island is really beautiful and enjoyable to discover. The atmosphere is peaceful; it is like the time stopped. It is a perfect place to go fishing on foot with the family, take some photos and observe the birds or simply to take your time and relax on one of the beaches.
