Summary of 2023 and 2024 wishes

Happy New Year

It is the first time I am writing this type of post as I usually only write about walks and places we have visited. I thought why not start the year with something a bit different. Also maybe during the year I will try different types of posts. I am actually thinking to add a new category in my blog to classify all these “miscellaneous” posts I might write.

For this first post of the year I have decided to reflect on the past year and discuss with you the plans I have for this new year (however they might change as I never keep any new year resolutions).

Personal life:

If you have been following me for a while you know that this year we have had the most precious gift as we welcomed our son Marcus in March. This meant that we have been busy adjusting our life to this little human. I am back now full time at work and Marcus is going to nursery.

We have also been busy decorating the house. We transformed our office room into Marcus’ bedroom and painted the fourth bedroom to make it our new office. The house is now painted but we still have some ceiling lights (cannot decide what we want) and little furnitures to buy (e.g. sideboard for the dining room, wine rack to put on our wall in the kitchen, hallway bench). For 2024 we want to finish the garage (paint the walls, put epoxy resin on the floor, change garage door for an electric and more insulated one and make one side of the garage as a gym). I think work in the garden will wait 2025 (we have a big garden for us and not sure what we want to do with it).

Walking:

Even though I have been walking nearly every day this year with Skye (I did stop walking him around two weeks before having Marcus as I was too tired) I haven’t done any fell /summit walks. However, we have done some great flattish walks in the Lake District and on the coastal path close to our house. We had some great weather around May/June so Marcus, Skye and I have been out walking everyday around the house and during weekend Matt joined us for some walks in the Lake. I think my favourite walks of the year were around Mellbreak and Grasmere to Rydal water. I don’t really have any walking plans for 2024, we are going slowly to do longer and less flat walks and continue visiting new places and try to find little secret spots. Are you doing any walking challenges this year?

Travelling:

We had two main breaks in 2023:

  • One week visiting Northumberland late June. We absolutely loved the Northumberland coast. We had an amazing weather, did some lovely walks on the beach, saw plenty of beautiful houses and castles and ate very well (we had a delicious seafood and fish platter that we had to share with Skye as we couldn’t finish. I think Skye still dreams about all that fishes). I was finally able to see some puffins. We really enjoyed our time there and totally recommend the area. We will definitely try to visit Northumberland again. I would like now to visit the Cheviot area.
  • Two weeks and half in France. In September we took the ferry again with Skye to visit our family in France. Baby Marcus was 6 months and everything went well. We went to Nantes to see Matt’s family, to my childhood friend’s wedding near Auch (Gers county) and spent some days with my mum in Sanguinet (Landes county). A lot of driving and food. I don’t think we will go to France in 2024, we will see.

We started 2024 by a long weekend in Scotland, Loch Long. We had rented a cabin in the Forest Holidays park near Arrochar and visited the Cowal peninsula. I will soon tell you everything about this little trip.

We have a trip to Glasgow to see our friend Tania planned for beginning of February (if everything goes well) and we need to plan a trip to London to renew Matt’s passport. We are also due a trip to Manchester to see our friends Ella and Julian. For bigger break we will see last minute as usual depending on our mood.

Blogging:

I didn’t publish a lot of posts this year. As you can guess I was busy with my little human and I would like to try to post once a week in 2024. I still have some posts to write about things we did in 2023. I would like also to finish formatting all my previous blog posts so they are all the same format. Additionally I am writing all my previous walks on Visorando website so you can easily download PDF and GPX files of the walk. Hopefully my blog will be as what I have in mind by end of 2024. I have also decided to try Tik Tok and post videos of our walks. Let’s see if I manage to do it the entire year. To finish, as I was mentioning at the beginning of this post I might post not just walk related posts. I will see if there are anything during the year that I feel worth sharing with you.

Books and TV:

I haven’t been able to read a lot this year. I wasn’t in the mood and I really missed it. So I am going to take the time this year to read at least two books per month. Again I don’t put any pressure on myself and will see at the end of the year what I achieved.

I did watch some movies and TV series but to be honest nothing worth sharing. Do you have any great recommendations?

Hobbies:

As I am trying to reduce my TV time I tried some new activities which included cross stitches and paint by number. I have to say that I love paint by number and already did three. Cross stitches was not for me. I have also bought myself a great book to learn baking. I will let you know how it goes. Any hobbies you have started recently?

This is everything I can think of for 2023. Let’s see what 2024 will bring.

I wish you plenty of great adventures, lovely time with your family and importantly good health.

  1. What a lovely newsy post, Melodie! I like this format, and it’s nice to learn a little bit about you as a family. What do you both do for a living? It’s hard working and having a little one but it’s what most of us do. Probably good to leave the garden till next year when Marcus can potter with you and ‘help’. Sounds like you have lovely plans. I love the Northumberland coast too. I took up QiGong this year, having done t’ai chi for a lot of years, and am really enjoying it, though I’m not really well enough to do anything much at present. Except blog! It has its uses.
We have friends who moved from here to a lovely villa, close to Nantes. They both have family in the south of England and it made ferry trips so much easier. We are going to spend a week with them in early June, and then a week in Valencia with my son and family in July. It will be too hot, but they have to stick to school holidays. You should travel, if you can, before Marcus reaches school age, but the money only stretches in so many directions. Wishing you a happy, healthy year.

    1. Hi Jo,
We both work in the nuclear industry. Matt is a commercial manager and I am a nuclear chemist specialised in radioactive waste management.
It is really good that you started something new. Do you like QiGong better than tai chi? I hope your friends like living in Nantes, I lived there for 4 years while I was at uni. There are plenty of nice things to visit in Nantes and around. The ” jardin des plantes” is lovely. I hope you will like Valencia I visited it during Las Fallas weekend it was amazing. Yes I am trying to see what holiday we could do this year but it will be june and september for sure.

      1. QiGong and t’ai chi are quite different, but complement each other, I feel. I enjoy doing both. My husband worked in that industry too for 20 years in the power station at Hartlepool. He sometimes visited other plants too. It was not what I expected to hear from you, but I imagine you both enjoy your jobs. Our friends moved to Brittany 2 years ago. We always thought they’d come back to visit the Algarve but they like their new life style very much. I’m excited to see the area.

      2. What jobs did you think we do? I also visited several nuclear plants in UK and France but not Hartlepool yet.
I am sure you will like where they live. I did enjoy my time in Nantes.

      3. I had no idea about Matt, but I suppose I might have thought of you as a teacher or office worker. Funny the assumptions people make, isn’t it. For the record, I was a seriously bored Civil Servant for 35 years, in Health and Social Security, as they were known then. I was a single parent and needed a steady income.
