In my research of seeing autumnal colours this year I remembered that I wanted to walk again around Grasmere and Rydal. Few years ago we had done a little walk following grasmere water, rydal water, up to rydal caves and back but we had not walk the other side of the valley using the coffin route.

Beginning of november we had a couple of lovely days so I decided that it was time to do this Grasmere to Rydal walk. We arrived a bit late (we struggle to get ready early with baby) so the main car park at the entrance of Grasmere was full but we found a space in the school’s car park which was open to visitors for the day.

We exited the parking and took the direction of the Keswick to Ambleside main road to cross it at the roundabout and take the little street passing in front of the famous Wordsworth’s Dove cottage. We didn’t stop to visit the cottage but you can easily combine a visit with this walk. We continued straight up this street to arrive at an intersection of paths and roads where we saw the direction of Rydal via the coffin route.

After a couple of meters the concrete road became a path; a bit rocky at some points. We continued on the coffin route crossing fields and little woods until reaching the top of Rydal village. The coffin route is a lovely path very easy with great views over Grasmere and Rydal water. There are even some benches along the path to stop and enjoy the views. We were lucky as the weather was very sunny and even warm.

Once in Rydal, we passed in front of Rydal Mount and Gardens (another Wordsworth’s house) and continued towards the main Keswick to Ambleside road to cross it and took right in the direction of Grasmere. (You can again combine this walk with the visit of Rydal Mount.) After a couple of meters, we turned left to cross a little bridge and find the path following the shore of Rydal water.

Taking the upper path with Grasmere water down.

We continued walking along Rydal water, the sun was starting to be hidden by the surrounding summits and it was starting to be a bit cooler but still enjoyable. We stopped on one of of the benches along the shore for a little sandwich before continuing in the direction of Grasmere water. This part of the walk was more popular than the coffin route and we had to stop several times to let people pass but we were in no hurry and enjoyed the fresh air and nice weather.

We decided to not go to Rydal caves as Marcus was starting to be grumpy in the backpack as he didn’t have any naps since we had left home in the morning. (We did last April a lovely walk to Rydal Caves with Matt’s nephew, I will post it when I have time. It is a perfect walk for little legs). This time we decided to follow the upper path as mentioned in the walk description we were following and to not go down the shore of Grasmere water. We had done the shore of Grasmere water previously so we wanted to discover this new path but if I have to do this walk again, which I think we will do this summer with Matt’s parents, we will use the path along Grasmere water.

The upper path, allowed us to overlook Grasmere water and led us to Red Bank road. We left the road to walk via Red bank wood which had amazing autumnal colours before joining again a further down Red Bank road. We followed this road passing in front of gorgeous houses until reaching Grasmere village. Marcus was now sleeping in the backpack so we roamed a bit around Grasmere village before walking back towards the car. I wanted to buy some gingerbread but the queue was too long and I didn’t fancy waiting (another time ! or I might order some online).

On the way back home, we decided to stop for a pint and late lunch/early dinner at The King’s Head Inn near Thirlmere. It was our first time stopping there. The food was nice and a bit different to normal pub food. Definitely worth a visit if you are around.

To conclude that lovely walk, I wish you all the Merry Christmas 2023.

Do you know any other low-level walks in that area?

  1. Far better weather than when I did this route in the first week of November 2022, but its a lovely low level walk, so perfect for all weathers. Have never stopped at the Kings Head Inn before, despite driving past probably over 50 or 60 times. Must make a visit next time

  2. A good lower level walk isn’t it. I’ve done it a few times but always in the opposite direction. Must try out your way next time.
I’ve never visited Anabel’s favourite Badger Bar (I’ve watched their webcam of the badgers though online) but like to stop for a coffee at the Rydal Hall cafe.

  3. I would love to do that walk. Rydal Hall grounds are lovely to walk around. There is a cafe there and a few interesting sculptures and a waterfall pool you can view from a little grotto. X
