Visit of Wallington Hall – Northumberland, England

Come with us to visit the gorgeous Palladian style Wallington Hall and its walled garden. A great dog friendly National Trust property to enjoy a day out in family.

Wallington garden

It has been a good two months since my last blog post. I have started working again (2 days a week until January then back to full time) and I needed a break from computer. I also started to do some paint by numbers canvas to hang in Marcus’ bedroom and with Matt we started doing jigsaw puzzles in the evening. So I have now a lot of blog posts to write 😔.

Mid June we spent a week holidaying on the coast of Northumberland. I had heard so many nice things about that county and especially that coast that I had put Northumberland on the top of my UK destination. I have to say we haven’t been disappointed.

I had booked a static caravan in a Parkdean holiday park in the south of the Northumberland coast. We had never been to a holiday park in UK before (did a lot of camping in France though) so we had no idea how it will be especially as we were going with a 3 months old baby and a dog. The static caravan and holiday park were basic but it was sufficient for us as we only wanted somewhere comfortable enough to sleep. The direct access to the beach was very good to walk Skye every morning before going to our little adventure. A very happy dog.

In the coming weeks (hopefully) I will write all about our holiday there. I have several blog posts in mind and I have decided to start our series of Northumberland blog posts with our visit to Wallington house and garden.

I don’t know if you have been before but if not I definitely recommend you to go. You will see below why.

Stepping stone to cross the river

Wallington house, garden and estate was given to the National trust properties in 1942 by Sir Charles Philips Trevelyan. The Trevelyan family had Wallington hall since 1777. The first owner was the Fenwick family from 1475 to 1688, date when the hall and estate were bought by Sir William Blackett. Sir Blackett fully rebuilt the hall to Palladian style destroying the ancien Pele Tower. Wallington stayed in the Blackett family before passing to the Trevelyan family.

We started the visit by the wall garden, which is absolutely stunning especially early summer when all the flowers are blooming. We then decided to do the river walk to visit a bit of the immense estate. The river walk path is well signposted and is an easy 4km walk starting from the wall garden, following the river and finishing in the woodland.

After the walk we visited the house. Wallington hall is gorgeous. Every rooms are splendid and ornaments, furnitures, paintings contained in these rooms are luxurious. The most impressive room is the covered courtyard in the middle of the hall. It is spectacular and a bit of a surprise to find this in the middle of a house. The visit is self-guided with several booklet full of information in each room and the volunteers are always happy to answer any questions.

After around 4 hours visit we drove back to the campsite for a relaxing end of afternoon and early evening in bed to try to have some good sleep.

Have you visited Wallington hall and estate?

  1. Somewhere in the depths of my old Restlessjo blog there’s a post on Wallington, Melodie, and I remember enjoying it very much. Life must be very busy with the baby and working full time but I’ll look forward to your next Northumberland post. It’s a favourite county of mine too.
