We had to wait until late January to finally be able to go for a walk in the fells. Unfortunately we have spent most of the Christmas break sick and started this new year and a good part of January with a bad cold and throat infection. So after three weeks isolating at home, we were keen to go in the fells but at the same time we were still feeling a bit weak to tackle big summits. So I thought it was the perfect opportunity to go and explore Dodd Wood. We opted for the Sandbed Gill trail (yellow marked trail) but there are plenty of other trails to follow in this forest.
The great thing about Dodd Wood or other Forestry England managed forests such as Whinlatter forest is that all the paths are well marked, large and maintained so it is really easy to go there without a lot of preparation and map reading beforehand. It is also a great place for Skye as he loves forest walks and he can roam freely. Well I am saying that the paths are easy to follow but actually we still managed to go off-track by missing a yellow arrow and ended leaving the forest and going up in the direction of Ling How and Ullock Pike.

We decided to continue on this path for a bit as we could see that there was some snow on the side of the path and we wanted to play with Skye in it. After playing with him, we decided to retrace our steps and a quick look at the map revealed that we could do a quick detour around Watches summit before heading to Dodd Wood. On one side of Watches summit the path offers a great view on the back of Ullock and Skiddaw summits, while on the other side of the path it is possible to see Bassenthwaite Lake.
After this little detour, we joined again Dodd Wood and found the path that we should have taken to stay on Sandbed Gill trail. We followed this trail back to the car park. I think next time we will explore the path going to Dodd summit or even attempt Ullock pike and Carl Side summits.
Have you been to Dodd Wood or done Ullock pike and Carl Side summits?

It looks like a good way of doing Ullock Pike. We have done Dodd Summit last Spring.

Despite being weak and just recovering from a bad cold and throat infection, exploring the Dodd Wood which requires tackling big summits is really commendable.
