Road trip along the Ayrshire Coast, Scotland

A great road trip to discover the Ayrshire coast and visit the gorgeous Culzean Castle.

For the second day of this long weekend, we decided to do a road trip from Stranaer to Troon. We stopped to visit the small villages along this pretty Ayrshire coast and in particular the magnificent Culzean Castle. The road along the coast offers beautiful views of Aisla Crag, especially around Girvan, and the Isle of Arran.

Aisla Crag is a tiny island about 10 miles from the Scottish coast. Formerly inhabited, it is now a nature reserve for birds including the northern gannet and the puffin. It is possible to go to the island for a few hours by taking a boat from the harbour of Girvan.

After trying to visit Turnberry Lighthouse which was closed due to Covid 19, we stopped to see Maidens harbour before heading to Dunure and Culzean Castle.

Culzean Castle

Culzean Castle was built in the middle of the 18th century for David Kennedy, 10th Earl of Cassilis. The castle remained in the Kennedy family until 1945 when it was donated to the National Trust for Scotland. Until recently a representation of the castle was printed on the Scottish £5 note. Unfortunately, we were unable to visit the castle as it was closed due to Covid 19 but we were able to walk around its huge estate The estate and all the buildings are very impressive and there are even beaches for swimming and spending the day in family. Matthieu bought a bottle of their whisky which apparently is very good with a fruity and floral taste.

Information to visit Culzean castle can be found on this website.

Girvan

Following this visit, we continued in the direction of Ayr and Troon. We really liked these two towns and especially the long beach at Troon. This coast is very popular because of its many golf courses which are often surrounded by magnificent houses.

Maidens harbour

As we had booked a B&B in Girvan, we stopped to eat on the way back at the Brig O’Doon restaurant in Alloway. The food was exquisite and the service impeccable.
