At the end of January, we spent a weekend with some friends in Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland. We wanted to visit Galloway Forest Park, which is apparently the largest forest in the UK with an area of 774 km2. This place was also recognised as a “Dark Sky area” in 2009 and receives around 800,000 visitors each year.

We planned to go hiking on Saturday and to visit the Annandale Whisky Distillery on Sunday morning.

Because the weekend before Matthieu sprained his ankle, we had to slightly modify our plans by opting for a hike with little ascent and short enough for him to join us. This is how we chose to do the one around Loch Trool, it was also close to the cottage we had reserved in Newton Stewart.

Besides being a magnificent place, Loch Trool is known to have been the battlefield where Robert the Bruce defeated the English army of Sir Aymer of Valence in March 1307. There is a memorial in his honour on the heights of the lake.

The trail is practically flat all around the lake that it overlooks. The view of the lake and the surrounding peaks is very pleasant and in this month of January the colours were superb. The trail is well marked all along with markers of different colours depending on the trails that you want to follow.

After enjoying the splendour and tranquillity of the place we went to eat at House O’Hill in Bargrennan before taking a stroll through the streets of Newton Stewart and heading to our cottage. House O ’Hill offers local food and beer.

The evening passed quietly at the cottage around a raclette.

This short hike made us want to return to this region and discover more of this forest.

Have you ever been in Galloway Forest Park?
