The weather forecast for the weekend was announced to be especially bad due to the arrival of the storm Ciara on the British coasts. But with my friend Tania, we saw that it should only deteriorate from Saturday afternoon, so we took advantage of a moment of calm to go for a walk on Saturday morning. Since there was quite a bit of wind, we wanted a hike in the valley and fairly sheltered from the wind. This is how we found this one which we thought would be pleasant.

This hike does not present any particular difficulty because there is not much ascent and the path is visible practically all along. The path begins along the Newlands Beck stream before climbing the slopes of Cat Bells, then passing along Derwent water and crossing the pretty village of Portinscale.

Overall this hike is not very popular, and we only encountered some people once on the way to Cat Bells and on the descent to Nichols End and Portinscale. We were very surprised by the beauty of the place especially the banks of the Newlands Beck river and the valley between Newlands and Skelgill. The winter colours were also beginning to give way to those of spring with some buds appearing on the trees.

It was also an opportunity for me to test the camera on my new mobile phone and I must say that I was impressed by the result.

Here are the key steps to do this hike:

– From the village of Braithwaite, take Croft Terrace street, then take the path indicating Little Braithwaite. Continue on this path that runs along the Barrow Gill stream until you see a small bridge that you have to cross. Continuing on the trail that still follows the Barrow Gill watercourse which then gives way to Newlands Beck. Continue until you reach Little Braitwaite.

– At the tarmac road, turn left and then, immediately after the bridge, turn right onto the path which runs alongside Newlands Beck. Continue straight ahead until you reach a road. At the road, turn right and continue on it until the village of Stair.

– At the entrance of the village of Stair, turn right towards the bridge, cross it and follow the road for a while. Pass Ellas Crag House and continue straight ahead until you see a path on the left that goes down to some houses. Take the path on the left just before the house and head towards the small bridge at the bottom of the field. Cross it and continue straight until you arrive on a tarmac road.

– At the road level turn left, then take the path on the right which goes across fields. Continue on the path until you reach Skelgill. Exit the village and take the path that goes down of Cat Bells. Be careful not to follow the path indicating Cat Bells, take the opposite one.

– This path joins Hawes End and follows the direction of Portinscale. Continue straight ahead following Portinscale. Pass Lingholm Estate, then Nichols End Marina and continue towards Portinscale.

– Take a left on the private street which runs along the main street of Portinscale. Continue on this street for a while until you see a path on the left which goes towards Ullock. Continue straight until you arrive on a paved road, turn right and continue straight on the road until you come to a road intersection. Take a right towards Little Braithwaite then follow the same path that you took at the beginning of the walk in the opposite direction as to find the parking.

La météo pour le weekend s’annonçait mauvaise notamment à cause de la venue de la tempête Ciara sur les côtes britanniques. Mais avec mon amie Tania, nous avions vu que cela ne devait se dégrader qu’à partir du samedi après-midi ainsi nous avons profité d’un moment de calme pour aller marcher le samedi matin. Vu qu’il y avait pas mal de vent, nous voulions une randonnée dans la vallée et assez protégée du vent. C’est ainsi que nous avons trouvé celle-ci qui nous semblait agréable.

Cette randonnée ne présente aucune difficulté particulière car il n’y a pas beaucoup de dénivelé et le sentier est visible pratiquement tout le long. Le sentier commence par longer le court d’eau Newlands Beck avant de monter sur les flancs de Cat Bells, puis de passer le long de Derwent water et de traverser le joli village de Portinscale.

Dans l’ensemble cette randonnée n’est pas très populaire et nous n’avons croisé du monde qu’une fois sur le chemin de Cat Bells et la descente vers Nichols End et Portinscale. Nous avons été très surprises par la beauté de l’endroit notamment les bords de la rivière Newlands Beck et la vallée entre Newlands et Skelgill. Les couleurs hivernales commençaient également à faire place à celles du printemps avec quelques bourgeons qui apparaissaient dans les arbres.

Ce fut également pour moi l’occasion de tester l’appareil photo de mon nouveau téléphone portable et je dois dire que je suis impressionnée par le résultat.

Voici les étapes clés pour faire cette randonnée :

– Depuis le village de Braithwaite, prendre la rue de Croft Terrace, puis prendre le sentier indiquant Little Braithwaite. Continuer sur ce sentier qui longe le cours d’eau Barrow Gill jusqu’à voir un petit pont qui faut traverser. Continuer sur le sentier qui suit toujours le cours d’eau Barrow Gill fait place à Newlands Beck. Continuer jusqu’à arriver à Little Braitwaite.

– Au niveau de la route goudronné, prendre à gauche puis, directement après le pont à droite sur le sentier qui longe Newlands Beck. Continuer toujours tout droit jusqu’à arriver sur une route. Au niveau de la route prendre à droite et continuer sur celle-ci jusqu’au village de Stair.

– A l’entrée du village de Stair, prendre à droite en direction du pont, le traverser et suivre la route pendant un moment. Passer Ellas Crag House et continuer toujours tout droit jusqu’à voir un chemin sur la gauche qui descend vers des maisons. Prendre le sentier sur la gauche juste avant la maison et se diriger vers le petit pont en bas du champ. Le traverser et continuer tout droit jusqu’à arriver sur une route goudronnée.

– Au niveau de la route prendre à gauche, puis prendre le sentier sur la droite qui va à travers champs. Continuer sur le sentier jusqu’à rejoindre Skelgill. Sortir du village et prendre le sentier qui part vers le bas de Cat Bells. Attention ne pas suivre le sentier indiquant Cat Bells, prendre son opposé.

– Le sentier rejoint Hawes End et suivre la direction de Portinscale. Continuer toujours tout droit en suivant Portinscale. Passer Lingholm Estate, puis Nichols End Marina et prendre toujours en direction de Portinscale.

– Prendre à gauche dans la rue privée qui longe la rue principale de Portinscale. Continuer dans cette rue pendant un moment jusqu’à voir un sentier sur la gauche qui va en direction de Ullock. Continuer tout droit jusqu’à arriver sur une route goudronnée, prendre à droite et continuer tout droit sur la route jusqu’à arriver à une intersection de route. Prendre à droite en direction de Little Braithwaite puis suivre en sens inverse le même sentier qu’à l’allée pour retrouver le parking.
