Visit Cragside estate, National Trust, Northumberland, England

In early June, we spent the weekend with friends in Newcastle. On Saturday they took us to visit Cragside estate which is about 1 hour north of Newcastle.

Cragside was the home of engineer and inventor William Armstrong and his wife. Gragside is best known for being the first home in the world to use hydroelectric power to produce electricity.

The house is located in a huge park that has lakes, forests and artificial gardens. There are several trails to take on foot or by car that explore the estate. It will take about 1h30 to visit the house and a little more than 2 hours to walk in the gardens.

The house is interesting to see especially the equipment that produces electricity. Also, some of the rooms have magnificent views overlooking the garden. But really for me it is the imposing marble fireplace and the gallery of paintings and collections that amazed me. I did not expect it at all and it was like a shock when I entered the room and saw this majestic fireplace.

The garden of rocks and the one of rhododendrons also astonished me. I loved walking on the trails to discover the ancient trees, the colourful flowers and the breathtaking views of the surrounding valley.

It is an absolutely beautiful place that I recommend visiting with family or friends. It takes a good day to see everything. The only small problem; it’s the amount of visitors. I did not take many pictures of the interior because there were too many people that day.

Do you know this place?

  1. I did not know that about it being the first house to use hydro electricity. Looks a fab place to visit too. Are you national trust members? Presently in Shropshire and hoping to go somewhere with our NT card today. Always difficult with a dog though!
