That Saturday, Matthew wanted to go to the centre of Lake District. As we live in the northwest edge of the national park, the Grasmere and Ambleside areas are not really our playground and we still have a lot to discover. I had just seen in my hiking magazine a walk in this valley I suggested it to Matthew and my friend.

The Langdale Valley is very touristy, and this hike is one of the most popular in the area. It goes through the peaks of Pavey Ark, Harrison Stickle and Pike of Stickle and descends by Langdale Comb. We have chosen to climb to Pavey Ark through Jack’s Rake which is a level 1 scrambling but beware this path is not for everyone. I would not recommend using this path if you have never done any scrambling/climbing before. Pavey Ark is in any case easily accessible following the right path along Bright Beck.

Once at the top, we arrived on a plateau from where the view was absolutely magnificent. It is possible to go from one peak to another without too much difficulty before descending along a wide path that goes through Langdale Comb.

Matthieu added Loft Crag to his list that day, my friend and I decided to go straight to Pike of Stickle because we were starting to get tire.

It was a tiring day for the body, mentally challenging with Jack’s Rake scramble but it is an exceptional day. We all loved it and were delighted to have done it.

Here are the key steps to do this hike:

-From the car park take the path that goes up towards Stickle tarn. Once at Stickle tarn turn right and continue straight until you cross the river (for the second time). If you decide to take the easy path, follow the one that goes straight along Bright Beck then up towards Pavey Ark. (If you turn left on the path around the lake and up to Jake’s Rake, be careful as the climb to Jake’s Rake is not very visible, follow this narrow path to the top of Pavey Ark. Be careful it is not accessible to all hikers)

– Once at the top of Pavey Ark, take towards Harrison Stickle. Then you can either go straight towards Pike of Stickle or take the path to the left that goes to Loft Crag before heading towards Pike of Stickle. To get to the top of Pike of Stickle you will have to do some scrambling, but it is accessible and not too dangerous.

-Go down from Pike of Stickle following the path on the left. Continue for a long time on this path before reaching a kind of plateau and see a smaller path that goes to the left just before a small pond on the right. Take this path that goes down to the bottom of the valley. Once at the intersection with a wider path (Cumbrian Way) turn left. Continue on this path to the village.

– Cross the village and go towards the national B5343. After passing a stone bridge, take the path (signposted New Dungeon Ghyll car park) on the left which goes through the fields. Follow this path to the car park.

Ce samedi-là, Matthieu avait envie d’aller découvrir le centre de Lake District. Vu que nous vivons au Nord-Ouest du parc national, la région de Grasmere et d’Ambleside n’est pas vraiment notre terrain de jeu et nous avons encore beaucoup à découvrir. J’avais justement vu dans mon magazine de randonnée une marche dans cette vallée et c’est donc celle-ci que je proposais à Matthieu et une copine.

La vallée de Langdale est très connue et cette randonnée est une des plus populaire du coin. Elle passe par les sommets de Pavey Ark, Harrison Stickle et Pike of Stickle et redescend par Langdale Comb. Nous avons choisi de faire la montée jusqu’à Pavey Ark en passant par Jack’s Rake qui est un « scrambling » de niveau 1 mais attention ce sentier n’est pas pour tout le monde. Je ne vous recommanderais pas de prendre ce sentier si vous n’avez jamais fait d’escalade. Pavey Ark est de toute façon accessible plus facilement par le sentier de droite qui longe Bright Beck.

Une fois en haut, nous sommes arrivés sur un plateau d’où la vue était absolument magnifique. Il est possible de passer d’un pic à l’autre sans trop de difficulté avant de redescendre en suivant un large sentier qui passe par Langdale Comb.

Matthieu lui ajouta Loft Crag à sa liste de pic ce jour-là, ma copine et moi décidâmes d’aller directement vers Pike of Stickle car nous commencions à fatiguer.

Ce fut une journée assez fatigante pour le corps, éprouvante mentalement avec le scrambling de Jack’s Rake mais exceptionnelle. Nous avons tous les trois adorés et étions ravis de l’avoir faite.

Voici les étapes clés pour faire cette randonnée :

-Depuis le parking prendre le sentier qui monte en direction de Stickle tarn. Une fois au niveau de Stickle tarn prendre à droite et continuer tout droit jusqu’à passer la rivière. Si vous décidez de prendre le sentier facile suivez celui qui va tout droit qui longe Bright Beck puis monte vers Pavey Ark. (Sinon prendre à gauche le sentier qui tourne autour du lac et puis qui monte vers Jake’s Rake. Faites attention car la montée vers Jake’s Rake n’est pas très visible. Suivez ce sentier étroit jusqu’en haut de Pavey Ark. Attention ce sentier n’est pas accessible à tous les randonneurs)

-Une fois en haut de Pavey Ark, prendre en direction d’Harrison Stickle. Puis vous pouvez soit aller tout droit en direction de Pike of Stickle soit prendre le sentier vers la gauche qui va vers Loft Crag avant de partir en direction de Pike of Stickle. Pour arriver en haut de Pike of Stickle il faudra faire un peu de scrambling mais c’est accessible et pas trop dangereux.

-Redescendre de Pike of Stickle en suivant le sentier de gauche. Continuer pendant un long moment sur ce sentier avant d’arriver sur un genre de plateau et de voir un plus petit sentier qui part vers la gauche juste avant une petite mare sur la droite. Prendre ce sentier qui descend jusqu’en bas. Une fois arrivé à l’intersection avec un plus large sentier (Cumbrian Way) prendre à gauche. Continuer sur ce sentier jusqu’au village.

-Traverser le village et aller en direction de la nationale B5343. Après avoir passé un pont en pierre, prendre le sentier (indiquant New Dungeon Ghyll car park) sur la gauche qui part à travers champs. Suivre ce sentier jusqu’au parking.
