This hike starts from the small car park of the old quarry along Newlands Hause and continues on this road before climbing towards Knott Rigg, Ard Crags, East Summit and down by Aikin Knott. This hike is not very hard, but the first climb is quite steep and a bit long for people not use to hike. The trail is well visible but there are some passages in particular towards Knott Rigg which have not been well maintained and where it will be necessary to be careful to not slip.

The view along the trail is beautiful and once at the top of Knott Rigg and Ard Crags the view is totally clear on the surrounding peaks. This hike is very little known, we did not meet anyone during the whole time there. It is a shame because it deserves to be known.

Here are the key steps to do this hike:

– From the car park take the national road and pass the Birkrigg Farms, Gillbrow Farm, Bawd Hall. Just after Ill Gill River and before the bend to get to Keskadale Farm, take the small path that climbs to the summit. Be careful, the path is not very visible.

– Follow this path for a while, you must follow the path in the middle of the hill. Do not take the path that goes straight or the path that goes down towards the road. This trail climbs to the top of Knott Rigg.

– Once at the top, it is possible to turn left to see the view. Then go back to the right and take towards Ard Crags. Continue straight towards East Summit and take the trail straight down.

– Once on the flat take the path on the left which goes towards the river Rigg Beck. Cross the river and take a right on the path. Continue straight to the parking.

Cette randonnée commence du petit parking de l’ancienne carrière le long de Newlands Hause et continue sur cette route avant de monter en direction de Knott Rigg, Ard Crags, East Summit et de redescendre par Aikin Knott. Cette randonnée n’est pas très dure mais la première montée est assez raide et un peu longue pour les non habitués. Le sentier est bien visible mais il y a certains passages notamment en direction de Knott Rigg qui n’ont pas été bien entretenu et où il faudra faire attention de ne pas glisser.

La vue tout le long du sentier est magnifique et une fois en haut de Knott Rigg et Ard Crags la vue est totalement dégagé sur les sommets environnants. Cette randonnée est très peu connue, nous avons rencontré personne pendant tout le trajet. C’est vraiment dommage car elle mériterait d’être connue.

Voici les étapes clés de pour faire la randonnée :

• Depuis le parking prendre la route nationale et passer devant les fermes de Birkrigg, Gillbrow Farm, Bawd Hall. Juste après avoir passé la rivière Ill Gill et avant le virage pour arriver à la ferme Keskadale Farm prendre le petit sentier qui monte en direction du sommet. Attention le sentier est peu visible.
• Suivre ce sentier pendant un moment, il faut longer par le milieu le flanc de la colline. Il ne faut pas prendre le sentier qui monte tout droit ou celui qui va vers le bas et la route. Ce sentier monte jusqu’en haut de Knott Rigg.
• Une fois en haut, il est possible de prendre à gauche pour aller la voir la vue. Puis revenir vers la droite et prendre en direction d’Ard Crags. Continuer tout droit en direction d’East Summit et prendre le sentier tout droit qui redescend.
• Une fois sur le plat prendre le sentier sur la gauche qui va en direction de la rivière Rigg Beck. Traverser la rivière et prendre à droite sur le sentier. Continuer tout droit jusqu’au parking.
