Early November we joined the Facebook group Let’s talk the lake for a hike around Walla Crag, Bleaberry and Ashness bridge. This hike is composed of two rather steep climbs otherwise the rest is easy. The trail is well marked and maintained. There are still some parts that can be muddy and slippery when it is raining. In November the autumnal colours were absolutely gorgeous and the views of Keswick, Derwent Water Lake, Bassenthwaite Lake and the surrounding valley were just magical. It is really a beautiful hike, not too hard and accessible for many hikers. A big thank you to Robin for showing us this place.

Here are the key steps to do this hike:

  • From the car park, take the path towards Cat Gill and Walla Crag. Follow it to the top of Walla Crag.
  • At the top of Walla Crag, take the path on the right that goes towards the plain and Bleaberry Fell. Continue straight up to the top of the summit and then come back down using the same path.
  • Once on the plateau take the path on the left which goes down to Ashness Bridge. Continue until you reach the bridge and the road.
  • Turn right onto the trail to Keswick / Great Wood car park.

Have you ever done this walk?

  1. Up to Walla Crag is a favourite short walk. As you say, nottoo difficult and great views. I’ve never made it to the top of Bleabury fell yet though. We walked up during our holiday back in August and came down via Ashness Bridge which is a very pretty viewpoint, if a bit of a honeypot.
