Penrith Winter Droving is an art festival that aims to celebrate animals. It happens every year around the end of October. Originally the Winter Droving was the act of  bringing the herds of sheep early winter from the pastures to the markets where they were sold. We could compare this to the transhumance festivals that are still celebrated in the Hautes Pyrénées in France. Here there are no real animals but representations of animals made of paper.

This year’s festival was a two-day festival with a parade through the streets of Ullswater on Friday night and an all-day art festival in Penrith followed by a parade on Saturday. So it was on saturday afternoon despite a freezing weather that we decided to go to this festival.

The center of the village became pedestrian for the occasion and contained stands of food, drinks, crafts of all kinds and four scenes in different places where were held mini music concert. The spectator was invited to wander around the streets of the city to discover all the artists. In addition to local music bands performing on stage, other artists and musicians were walking around the streets to perform some shows.

Around 7pm the parade began in the streets. The illuminated paper animals invaded the streets, accompanied by the most extravagant human disguises. The party continued all night in the pubs of the city but for us it was time to go home to warm up.

We absolutely loved this festival which is a real treat for the eyes and ears. The family atmosphere is very nice and we did not have the feeling of being clumped together even though there were a lot of people. It’s a show for the whole family that will delight young and old. It is also possible to visit Penrith at the same time if you do not know this beautiful village. In the future we want to return to Penrith  to visit the museums and castles around while waiting for next year festival.

Do you know the Penrith Winter Droving? Would you like to go there?

Le Winter Droving de Penrith est un festival d’art qui vise à célébrer les animaux. Il se passe chaque année vers la fin du mois d’octobre. A l’origine le Winter Droving correspondait au fait d’amener les troupeaux de moutons en début d’hiver d’en haut des pâturages jusqu’aux marchés où ils étaient vendus. Nous pourrions comparer ça aux fêtes de la transhumance qui sont encore célébrées dans les Hautes Pyrénées en France. Ici il n’y a pas de vrais animaux mais des représentations d’animaux faites en papiers.

Cette année le festival se déroulait sur deux jours avec un défilé dans les rues de Ullswater le vendredi soir et un festival d’art toute la journée à Penrith suivit également d’un défilé. C’est donc le samedi après-midi malgré un temps glacial que nous décidâmes d’aller faire un tour au festival.

Le centre du village devenu piétons pour l’occasion contient des stands de nourritures, boissons, d’objets artisanaux en tout genre et quatre scènes à différents endroits où se tiennent de mini concert de musique. Le spectateur est ainsi invité à déambuler dans les rues de la ville pour découvrir tous les artistes. En plus des groupes de musique locaux se produisant sur scènes d’autres artistes et musiciens se promènent dans les rues pour faire le spectacle.

Vers 19h la parade commence à défiler dans les rues. Les animaux en papiers éclairaient envahissent les rues accompagnées d’humain aux déguisements des plus extravagants. La fête continue toute la nuit dans les pubs de la ville mais pour nous il était temps de rentrer se réchauffer à la maison.

Nous avons absolument adoré ce festival qui est un vrai régal pour les yeux et les oreilles. L’atmosphère familiale est très agréable et nous n’avons pas eu la sensation d’être agglutiné les uns sur les autres même s’il y avait beaucoup de monde. C’est un spectacle pour toute la famille qui ravira petit et grand. Il est également possible de visiter Penrith en même temps si vous ne connaissez pas ce beau village. Nous avons d’ailleurs envie de retourner visiter Penrith et notamment de faire un tour dans les musées et châteaux environnants en attendant le festival de l’année prochaine.
