In early August our friend Sylvain came to visit us for a few days. On Saturday we wanted to take him around Buttermere and hike over the lake. I had seen two hikes that could be interesting and after discussion we opted for this one that was mentioned in the August edition of the Country Walking magazine. This path is not very popular and is quite difficult to follow once arrived on the plain between High Snockrigg and Robinson because it is not marked at all. It is advisable to do this hike in clear weather. The descent is also difficult because the trail is very rocky and steep. In rainy day it is very slippery. It is a hike quite difficult and not accessible to all. But once up the view of the Buttermere Valley is just outstanding.

Here are the key steps to do this hike:

  • At Buttermere village, take the Newlands Pass road that goes to the top of the little church. Continue on this road until you see a trail on the right, mentioned Robinson 1 ½ miles, going uphill. Follow this path to the top.
  • Once at the top turn right towards the end of the cliff to have a magnificent view of Buttermere. Then retrace your steps and take a right across the plain towards Robinson’s summit. It is at this point that the path disappears. It is necessary to cross the plain following the base of Robinson until arriving at a fence and a small ladder, which crosses the fence.
  • Pass the fence and turn right on the trail that goes down. This part of the hike is quite difficult because the trail is very small, steep and slippery. Follow this path until you reach a gate. Go through the gate and continue straight through the forest.
  • Once on the road take the path opposite that goes towards the Buttermere Lake. Once on the path along the lake, turn right and follow the path to the parking.

Do you know this walk? Where do you find walking ideas?

  1. This is such an insightful post! I almost felt I was actuallt there. So valuable to know that one needs to look for clear weather and avoid rain. I personally did a hike up mount Snowden a couple of years ago in winter, and it was very cloudy and about to get dark. I think as amateur, I can say I was a bit (or maybe rather) careless 🙂 Thank your for inspiration! 🙂 Viktor
