In May my company sent me 4 days to Stockholm for work. Since we worked at night, with one of my colleagues we decided to take advantage of our free days to visit this city.

The first day we went to the Gamla Stan area. Gamla Stan is probably the best-known district of Stockholm because it is the ancient city dating from the 13th century and where the royal palace is located.

From our hotel we took the metro to the Gamla Stan stop to visit this island on foot. We started by Riddarholmen, which is on the left side of Gamla Stan. This part is less touristy than the center of Gamla Stan because it is slightly far from the center. But it is no less interesting to visit. After crossing the bridge, we headed towards the royal palace because we wanted to see the change of the guard. Every day around noon it is possible to see the change of the guard from the central courtyard of the royal palace. The change takes about 30 minutes and is absolutely beautiful. I had attended the one in Copenhagen and I was very excited, and I must admit that this one is even more majestic.

After the show we went to the bank of the river and to visit the most touristy streets of the old city. On the way we saw the narrowest street of Stockholm, Marten Trotzigs Grand. The streets of Gamla Stan are very popular and filled with souvenir shops, art objects and other unusual shops. The buildings are well preserved and the architecture very interesting to see. There are beautiful buildings and the streets are super clean. We would have thought that we were in a small village and not in the capital city of a country. For me it is the most beautiful part of Stockholm that I visited.

Before heading back to the hotel, we headed towards the City to find something to eat. We stopped in the Holly Green restaurant. This restaurant is a kind of fast food that sells salads to take away or eat in. The salad is very hearty and for a reasonable price. It is a good address for a healthy meal. The City is an area of Stockholm dating back to the 18th century. The City is the area where shopping centers, chic boutiques, restaurants and trendy nightclubs are located. The architecture is very modern and cold compared to Gamla Stan. This is the neighbourhood I liked the least in Stockholm.

This first day allowed us to discover the old and the new Stockholm. We had a good overview of the beauty of the city and unfortunately, we did not have time to visit any museums. There is a lot to see and do in Stockholm, especially in Gamla Stan. I think I will have to go back.
Have you ever been to Stockholm?
I visited Stockholm for a holiday in 2016. I loved it. I also liked the Gamla Stan area best – I think everybody does. There is a cute vegetarian restaurant there called The Hermitage which was fine but not amazing. If you go again I recommend you visit
Hermann’s Vegetarian restaurant which overlooks the port area. It’s a famous restaurant with magnificent views and a quirky bohemian interior. I wrote a blog on Stockholm which is in my ‘Europe’ category if you’d like to compare notes 🙂
