The weekend before Halloween with my friend Pauline, we wanted to go for a little hike. After doing some research in her hiking books, Pauline suggested to go for a hike near Rivington. 

Rivington is located about 40 minutes north west of Manchester. This city bordering the reservoirs of Anglezarke, Upper Rivington, Lower Rivington and Yarrow, which are used to supply Liverpool with drinking water, is famous for its peak, the Rivington pike. This peak, which is part of the West Pennines Moor mountain range, is 363 meters high. In 1733 John Andrew built a hunting hall at the top of Rivington Pike. From the top of this summit, when the weather allows it, it is possible to see Lake District and even to the Isle of Man and the Welsh mountains. 

Our trek consisted of crossing the Lever Park in order to see the ruins of the replica of Liverpool Castle and then pass the Pigeon Tower before reaching Rivington Pike and down to the car. In 1900, William Lever purchased the land at the edge of the Lower Rivington Reservoir, which he donated to the people of Bolton to create a municipal park. In 1912 he decided to build a replica of the ruins of Liverpool Castle as a work of art to decorate the park. This replica is always visible and can be visited. Another building built for William Lever was the Pigeon Tower. Built in 1910, this 3-storey tower housed pigeons and doves in the first two floors, while the third was Madame Lever’s sewing room.

Here are the steps to realise this hike:

• From the school parking turn right on Rivington Lane and after a few meters take the left path that goes to the parking. Follow this path always straight until you reach the ruins of the castle;
• After passing the ruins, follow the path down the reservoir through the woods until you reach Go Ape. Cross the Go Ape and the pub car park towards Rivington Road. Continue on Rivington Road for a while. Then take the path on the right that goes to Rivington Hall Barn. Follow this path to the car park;
• At the Pigeon Tower car park, turn right (middle path) to the Pigeon Tower. Continue straight on Belmont Road. Then turn left towards Rivington Pike;
• From the top of Rivington Pike, take the downhill path (opposite the trail you took previously), cross Belmont road and continue straight across fields until you reach Roynton Road. Follow Roynton Road to the parking.

This hike is quite easy but the trails can be quite muddy and damaged. It is best to do this hike with the sun to have a beautiful view on the English countryside. On this weekend of Halloween, the weather was not good and we did the hike immersed in the mist. Although we could not see the beautiful landscapes, I still enjoyed this ghostly atmosphere with the colours of autumn and the fog. I think I will return in the spring to admire the views.

Le weekend avant Halloween avec ma copine Pauline, nous avons eu envie d’aller faire une petite randonnée. Après avoir fait quelques recherches dans ses livres de randonnées, Pauline me proposa d’aller faire une randonnée vers Rivington.

Rivington est situé à 40 min environ au nord ouest de Manchester. Cette ville en bordure des réservoirs de Anglezarke, Upper Rivington, Lower Rivington et Yarrow, qui servent à alimenter Liverpool en eau potable, est réputée pour son pic, le Rivington pike. Ce pic qui fait parti de la chaine montagneuse West Pennines Moor a une hauteur de 363 mètre. En 1733, John Andrew construisit un hall de chasse au sommet de Rivington Pike. Depuis le haut de ce sommet, lorsque le temps le permet, il est possible de voir Lake District et même jusqu’à l’Isle of Man et les montagnes galloises.

Notre randonnée consistait à traverser le parc : Lever Park pour voir les ruines de la réplique du château de Liverpool puis passer devant le pigeonnier : Pigeon Tower avant d’atteindre Rivington Pike et de redescendre vers la voiture. En 1900, William Lever acheta les terres en bordure du réservoir de Lower Rivington qu’il donna à la population de Bolton pour créer un parc municipal. En 1912 il décida de faire construire une réplique des ruines du château de Liverpool comme œuvre d’art pour décorer le parc. Cette réplique est toujours visible et visitable. Un autre édifice construit pour William Lever fut the Pigeon Tower. Construite en 1910, cette tour de 3 étages abritait des pigeons et colombes dans les deux premiers étages alors que le troisième était la salle de couture de madame Lever.

Voici les étapes pour réaliser cette randonnée :

• Depuis le parking de l’école prendre à droite sur Rivington Lane puis au bout de quelques mètres prendre le sentier de gauche au niveau du parking. Suivre ce sentier toujours tout droit jusqu’à arriver aux ruines du château.
• Après avoir passer les ruines, suivre le chemin du bas qui longe le réservoir à travers les bois jusqu’à arriver à Go Ape. Traverser le parking de Go Ape et du pub en direction de la route Rivington Road. Continuer sur Rivington Road pendant un moment. Puis prendre le chemin à droite qui va vers Rivington Hall Barn. Suivre ce sentier jusqu’au parking.
• Au parking de Pigeon Tower, prendre à droite (sentier du milieu) qui va vers the Pigeon Tower. Continuer toujours tout droit sur Belmont Road. Puis prendre à gauche vers Rivington Pike.
• Depuis le sommet de Rivington Pike, prendre le sentier qui descend (opposé de celui de l’allée), traverser Belmont road et continuer toujours tout droit à travers champs jusqu’à arriver sur Roynton Road. Suivre Roynton Road jusqu’au parking.

Cette randonnée est assez facile mais si les sentiers peuvent être assez boueux et accidentés. Il est préférable de la faire avec le soleil pour avoir une belle vue sur la campagne anglaise. En ce weekend d’halloween, le beau temps n’était pas au rendez vous et nous avons fait la randonnée immergé dans la brume. Même si nous n’avons pas pu apercevoir les beaux paysages, j’ai quand même apprécié cette atmosphère fantomatique avec les couleurs d’automnes et ce brouillard. Je pense que j’y retournerai au printemps pour admirer les vues.
