Located about 2h-2h30 from Manchester by car, Snowdonia National Park is one of the three national parks in Wales. Located in North Wales, Snowdonia contains nine mountain ranges with the highest peaks reaching 900 m. Consisting of lakes, forests and other natural beauties, this park is a huge playground for hikers, climbers and other extreme sports lovers.

Since we live in Manchester we have had the opportunity to go twice to Wales but never to Snowdonia. You can also read our visit of the South of Wales and the island of Anglesey on the blog. All this summer I was telling Matthieu that I wanted to go camping in the UK but as he hates camping he always refused. So when our friend Braxton suggested to go camping to Mount Snowdon I negotiated with Matthieu so we could go. Finally, Matthieu gave in and, after borrowing his colleague’s tent, we set out on a Saturday morning in August to camp at Snowdonia.

We pitched our tent in the small campsite at Garth Farm. We had a great view on the lake but unfortunately we were in the wind. After putting together our camp and eating a bit we headed for Crib Goch.

Unfortunately the parking closest to the start of the hike (Pen y Pass) was full so we had to park on the A498, which is 1 km down. We had in mind to hike the Snowdon Horseshoe Scrambling Route proposed by the blog Mud and Routes. This route includes the peaks of Y Lliwedd, Crib Goch, Crib y Ddsygl, Snowdon, Craig Fach and Callt y Wenallt. The first peak of the hike was Crib Goch.

Unfortunately for several reasons we could not do this route entirely. Firstly, we started this hike fairly late because of the traffic on the road, secondly we had significantly overestimated our ability to do this hike and thirdly the weather began to degrade and the clouds were descending on the slopes of the mountain. So instead we decided to just do Crib Goch’s peak and to go down. The only thing we did not know was that there is not really a way to go down from Crib Goch, once up you have to go to the other peak to find a path that goes down. But with patience and precautions we succeeded in descending without going to the second peak.

From Pas y Penn the path that goes up to the foot of Crib Goch is fairly accessible and offers splendid views on the surrounding mountains. The difficult part is to go up to the summit of Crib Goch. Access to the summit is done by climbing rocks, it is a Scramble grade 1. This climb is very impressive because it is open on the void. Once up the view is just of an unimaginable beauty. But it is also often there that people are panic-stricken because there is no trail on the crest, only rocks with void on each side for path. Since the sky was overcast and we could not see the next summit, we decided cautiously to go down to the path that passes down Crib Goch. Be careful, once you are on the top of Crib Goch you have to go to the next peak to find a marked trail. You can do as we did go downhill but there is no trail and the descent is limit harder than the climb.

Finally we reached the hiking trail, which passes at the foot of Crib Goch after about 1h30 of descent and then joined the car and camping tired of our excursion. After a good campfire, we went to sleep in the Welsh cold. This night was not the best memory of this weekend. It was extremely cold for an August night and this comforted Matthieu in his idea that he does not like to camp to my utmost despair.

This hike is the hardest we did for the moment in UK and we recommend it only to people who do a lot of hikes and who are experienced in the mountains. Despite the difficulty it was the most beautiful hike we did. It made us realise how small and insignificant we are next to these majestic mountains thousands of years old. But also that this kind of place must be respected if we want future generations to enjoy this beauty. So please bring your waste home, do not leave them in the nature !!
