Durham and the Durham Heritage Coast- England

Last year we visited Scarborough and the Yorkshire Coast and this summer we wanted to go a bit further up North and visit Durham and the coast between Durham and Whitby. After visiting Mount Grace Priory, we decided to visit Durham.

Read about our visit of Scarborough and Mount Grace Priory.

To avoid driving in the city center with the car, we parked it in the Park and Ride car park on the edge of town and took the bus to the city center. This bus is very convenient and it only costs £ 2 per person to park the car and go to the city center.

Once we arrived in Durham, we decided to wander in the streets with no specific purpose before arriving at the magnificent cathedral of Durham. This cathedral was founded in 1093 and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986. It is possible to visit the Cathedral and the cloisters; only the main façade can be seen from the other side of the River Wear. After walking through the streets of the city centre we decided to follow the path along the Wear river. This path is very well maintained with plenty of benches to rest and enjoy the tranquillity of the river and avoid the effervescence of downtown. We were able to observe some rowing boats on the water.

For the lunch, we decided to take the car in order to eat by the North Sea. We found a small area with some tables and with a view on the sea and an access to the beach (before arriving at the village of Seaham on the B1287). The Durham Heritage Coast is one of the prettiest coasts of England. It goes from Sunderland to Hartlepool and offers a multitude of activities for adults and children.

Find more about the Durham Heritage Coast on the official website.

During our visit the weather was not good, so we decided to take the car and head towards Saltburn by the sea. Saltburn by the sea is a small touristic town by the sea. This town reminded us a little bit of La Baule in France because of these immense buildings overlooking the bay. Saltburn is known for its long pier where people like to stroll and its small telecabines that go down to the beach. Between two sunny spells, we were able to take some pictures and to observe some surfers braving the waves.

Then we drove in direction of Staithes. Staithes is an old fishing port that was once the home of Captain James Cook. Nowadays this village is very touristy and filled with small cottage to spend the holidays. This village is very charming.

Because of the rain we decided to shorten our weekend and we went back to Manchester. This part of England is very pleasant to visit and we loved our weekend. We are planning to go back for a few hikes along the coast and in the surrounding hills.

Do you know this part of England?

      1. C’est régulièrement le cas malheureusement, pour les photos interdites, mais de moins en moins j’ai l’impression tout de meme. M’enfin faut profiter avec les yeux, ça reste l’essentiel, et tant pis pour le blog. 🙂

  1. Lovely Durham, I grew up in Newcastle just a short distance away from Durham. The North East is a beautiful part of England, although I haven’t lived there for many years. You have a beautiful blog, really enjoying reading.
