Il y a un an, nous sommes allés visiter la côte du Yorkshire. Cette fois ci nous avions envi de visiter le parc national de North York Moors et de faire quelques randonnées. Malheureusement quelques jours avant notre weekend, Matthieu s’est fait mal à son genou et nous n’avons pas pu faire les longues randonnées que nous avions prévu.

A la place nous avons décidé d’aller visiter l’abbaye de Mount Grace Priory. Cette ancienne abbaye appartient au National Trust et est entretenue par l’English Heritage (même principe que le National Trust). C’est l’une des seules abbayes cartésiennes qui ait survécu et qu’il est possible de visiter en Angleterre.Chaque moine avait une petite maison et jardin qui étaient attenants à ceux d’un autre moine. Les maisons étaient disposées toutes autour d’une place centrale où les moines pouvaient se rencontrer et prier. Les moines avaient un régime strict qui ne contenait que les végétaux qu’ils faisaient pousser dans leur jardin.

Une des maisons a été restauré et montre les conditions de vies de ces moines. Le reste de l’abbaye est malheureusement en ruine. Il y a un grand jardin avec des tables pour pouvoir profiter du beau temps et faire un pique nique.

Nous avons apprécié cette visite et surtout le jardin qui est très fleuri.

Suite à cette visite, nous sommes allés faire une petite marche d’environ 1h vers le lac de Cod Beck à Osmotherley. Depuis le lac nous avons suivi le chemin qui mène à Scarth Wood Moor puis avons erré au gré de notre envi avant de repartir vers la voiture. Pendant l’été, les collines sont recouvertes d’une plante violette appelée Heather. Cette plante porterait bonheur aux conducteurs s’ils accrochent une branche au pare-choc de leur voiture. Depuis le parking vous trouverez plein de chemin pour faire de la randonnée. Les vues depuis le haut des collines sont absolument magnifiques et à couper le souffle.

A year ago, we visited the Yorkshire coast. This time we wanted to visit the North York Moors National Park and do some hiking. Unfortunately a few days before our weekend, Matthieu hurt his knee and we could not do the long hikes we had planned. 

Instead we decided to visit Mount Grace Priory Abbey. This former abbey belongs to the National Trust and is maintained by the English Heritage (same principle than the National Trust). It is one of the only Carthusian abbeys that has survived and that it is possible to visit in England. 

Each monk had a small house and garden that adjoined another monk’s. The houses were all arranged around a central square where monks could meet and pray. The monks had a strict regime, which contained only the vegetables they grew in their garden.

One of the houses has been restored and shows the living conditions of these monks. The rest of the abbey is unfortunately in ruins. There is a large garden with tables to enjoy the good weather and a picnic.

We enjoyed this visit and especially the garden, which is very flowery in summer time

Following this visit, we went for a short walk around Cod Beck reservoir in Osmotherley. From the lake we followed the path that leads to Scarth Wood Moor and then wandered around before heading back to the car. During the summer, the hills are covered with a purple plant called Heather. This plant would bring happiness to drivers if they hang a branch to the bumper of their car. From the parking you will find plenty of path for hiking. The views from the top of the hills are absolutely stunning and breathtaking.
