For Easter 2016, we went to visit Edinburgh. One of our friends from Nantes was also there at that time, so we took this opportunity to go to see him.

It took me time before writing this article because I don’t know why I was not inspired. I was amazed by the beauty of the west coast (around Oban) of Scotland but in the case of Edinburgh I have a mix feeling. I was expected much more. I heart so many good things about this town that my expectancies were a little too high. Or maybe the fact that it was raining the 2 days we were there and the fact that we had a problem with our car made our stay in Edinburgh not as memorable as we imagined.

So it was late afternoon, after 6 hours of driving instead of 4 hours because of the traffic jams that we arrived in Edinburgh. We had booked a room on Airbnb website not far from the city centre, which allowed us to visit on foot.

So, on this first evening, we went for a walk in the streets of Edinburgh to immerse ourselves in the Scottish atmosphere. The main street is named the Royal Mile and goes up to the castle. This street is mainly composed of shops and historic buildings. The perpendicular streets are also charming to visit. After two good hours wandering in the streets with a thin rain and an icy wind we stopped by a pub to test the famous haggis in a burger. To tell the truth it was a good discovery, the taste of the haggis was not as strong as we thought and we enjoyed the meal. 

After a good night’s sleep and a delicious breakfast we went on foot to visit the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. That morning, the rain stopped, which made it possible to visit the garden quietly. This garden, founded in 1670, has an area of ​​about 70 acres and is divided into several themes that make us traveling around the world. It has a very beautiful collection of flowers and plants and offers beautiful views on Edinburgh. It is a very nice place to visit especially if you like flowers. 

In the afternoon we went to Calton Hill before the rain returned and didn’t leave us until our departure. Calton Hill is very touristy and also allows seeing the city of Edinburgh in the distance. To warm us up we stopped drinking hot chocolate in Casa Angelina‘s tearoom. Everything is homemade and the atmosphere is very charming. Additionally, this tearoom is in the basement. As we walked through the streets I noticed that there were apartments at a lower level than the road and so I wanted to see what it was like to live in this kind of place. It is what we did while visiting this tearoom.

In the afternoon, we took the car to visit Leith quarter. This place is well known as it is the port of the boat the Royal Yacht Britannia that is the old boat of the royal family. After a walk along the canals it was time to eat at our friend’s. The next day we returned to Manchester. 

What do you think of Edinburgh?

Pour Pâques 2016, nous avions envie d’aller visiter Edimbourg. Un de nos amis de Nantes était lui aussi à cette époque la, là-bas du coup nous en avons profité pour aller le voir.

J’ai mis beaucoup de temps avant d’écrire cet article car je ne sais pas pourquoi je n’étais pas inspirée. Autant j’ai été émerveillé par la beauté de la côte ouest (autour d’Oban) de l’Ecosse autant Edimbourg je suis mitigée. Je m’attendais à beaucoup mieux. J’avais tellement entendu de bons échos de cette ville que j’avais peut être placé la barre un peu trop haute. Ou peut être que le fait qu’il ait plu les 2 jours que nous étions là-bas et le fait que nous avons eu un problème avec notre voiture ont fait que notre séjour à Edimbourg n’a pas été aussi formidable que ce que nous imaginions.

C’est donc en fin d’après midi, après 6h de route au lieu de 4h à cause des bouchons que nous arrivâmes à Edimbourg. Nous avions réservé une chambre sur le site Airbnb pas très loin du centre ville ce qui nous a permis d’aller visiter à pied.

Ainsi, en ce premier soir, nous sommes allés nous promener dans les rues d’Edimbourg pour nous imprégner de l’atmosphère écossaise. La rue principale est nommée le Royal Mile et remonte jusqu’au château. Cette rue est principalement composée de magasins et de bâtiments historiques. Les rues perpendiculaires sont également charmantes à visiter. Après deux bonnes heures à déambuler dans les rues sous une fine pluie et un vent glacial nous nous arrêtâmes dans un pub pour tester le fameux haggis sous forme de burger. A vrai dire ce fut une bonne découverte, le goût du haggis n’étant pas aussi fort que ce que nous pensions ainsi nous avons apprécié le plat.

Après une bonne nuit et un délicieux petit déjeuner nous partîmes à pied visiter le Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. Ce matin là, la pluie s’était arrêtée ce qui a permis de visiter tranquillement le jardin. Ce jardin fondé en 1670 a une surface d’environ 35 hectares et est découpé en plusieurs thématiques qui font voyager à travers le monde. Il a une très belle collection de fleurs et plantes et offre de magnifiques vues sur Edimbourg. C’est un très bel endroit à visiter surtout si vous aimez les fleurs.

L’après midi nous sommes allés à Calton Hill avant que la pluie ne revienne et ne nous quitte plus jusqu’à notre départ. Calton Hill est très touristique et permet aussi de voir la ville d’Edinbourg au loin. Pour nous réchauffer nous nous arrêtâmes boire un chocolat chaud dans le salon de thé Casa Angelina. Tout est fait maison et l’atmosphère est très charmante de plus, ce salon de thé est en sous sol. En nous promenant dans les rues j’avais remarqué qu’il y avait des appartement un niveau plus bas que la route et j’avais donc envie de voir ce que ça rendait de vivre dans ce genre d’endroit. Ce que nous fîmes en visitant ce salon de thé.

Pour la suite de la journée, nous prîmes la voiture pour aller visiter le quartier de Leith. Cet endroit est très connu car c’est le port où est accosté le Royal Yacht Britannia qui est l’ancien bateau de la famille royale. Après une promenade le long des canaux il était temps d’aller manger chez notre ami. Le lendemain nous repartîmes vers Manchester.
