Hardcastle crags is an area belonging to the National Trust. Composed mainly by woods it is a popular place especially between mid April and mid May when the bluebells invade the forest. We went there early May when the bluebells were in full bloom. These small flowers look like lily of the valley but with a dark blue / purple colour that is absolutely beautiful and make the walk magical.

We left the car park and walked in the direction of the Gibson Mill following the marked red trail following the river. Once we arrived at the mill we visited it (free). Then we crossed the stone bridge and followed the top path until its end. Arrived at the end of the trail we had a beautiful view of the surrounding countryside. Then we left in the opposite direction but this time using the lower path until we reached a bridge that we crossed. We followed this trail to Gibson Mill.

To get back to the car we decided to take the red trail that climbs through the forest rather than following the paved road.

There are plenty of trails available and you will find a map detailing all the possibilities at the entrance to the car park.

There is also a small cafe at Gibson Mill for eating and restrooms.

This walk is very easy and accessible for the whole family.

Hardcastle crags est un domaine appartenant au national trust. Composé principalement par des bois c’est un endroit populaire surtout entre mi avril et mi mai date à laquelle les jacinthes des bois envahissent la forêt. Nous y sommes allés début mai pile au moment où les jacinthes étaient en pleine floraison. Ces petites fleurs ressemblant à des brins de muguet mais d’un bleu/violet sombre sont absolument magnifique et rendent la balade féérique.

Nous sommes partis du parking en direction du moulin de Gibson (Gibson Mill) en suivant le sentier balisé en rouge qui suit la rivière. Une fois arrivé au moulin que nous avons visité (gratuit), nous avons traversé le pont en pierre et suivi le sentier du haut jusqu’à la fin. Arrivé à la fin du sentier nous avons eu une très belle vue sur la campagne environnante. Puis nous sommes repartis en sens inverse mais cette fois-ci par le sentier du bas jusqu’à atteindre un pont que nous avons traversé. Nous avons suivi le sentier jusqu’à Gibson Mill.

Pour rejoindre la voiture nous avons décidé de prendre le sentier rouge qui monte à travers la forêt plutôt que de suivre la route goudronnée.

Il y a pleins de sentiers possibles et vous trouverez une carte détaillant toutes les possibilités à l’entrée du parking.

Il y a également un petit café au niveau de Gibson Mill pour se restaurer et des toilettes.

Cette balade est très facile et accessible pour toute la famille.
