Just 15km away from Benidorm, Spain, the Fonts d’Algar offer a lush, turquoise paradise that feels a world away from the city’s hustle. This series of cascading waterfalls and natural springs is a protected wetland, famous for its “source of health” pools that stay a crisp 18°C year-round. It is family-friendly and even dog-friendly.

Before going on holiday I did a bit of research online to see what we could visit around Benidorm and directly Les Fonts d’Algar (Algar waterfalls) attracted me. So as soon as we arrived at Magic Pirate Island resort, I asked the lovely lady from Jet2holiday if they had any excursions there. She said that they were working with Round Town Travel company and indeed had a half day trip to the waterfalls.

The bus picked us at 10 am from the outside of the hotel and drove us to Callosa d’en Sarrià village. We passed through nice mountain villages on the way there. The bus guide explained that the white nets on the sides of the road were used to cultivate the nispero fruit, which is apparently a cross between an apricot and a plum. The fruit is harvested during spring time and only cultivated in that area of Spain. Apparently they make different types of products with it. Once at Callosa d’en Sarrià, we walked to the entrance of the Algar waterfall circuit. We had 3h to explore by ourselves the 1.5km long path along the river Algar before being collected again by the bus and drove back to our hotel.

The area is very touristy so in summer they limit the numbers of people by putting in place booking slot to visit. During our visit it was busy but not overcrowded so it wasn’t too bad but I still struggled to take photos without a lot of people in. The algar waterfall is actually several waterfalls of different sizes along the river Algar. There are plenty of natural pools to swim and shaded areas to sit and relax. We decided to walk up to the last waterfall to see if it was less busy but it wasn’t so after taking a lot of photos and trying to play in the water with Marcus, we walked slowly back to the entrance. We thought that Marcus will loved it, however he didn’t because the water was very cold. So with a bit of spare time we stopped at one of the restaurant in the village for a drink.
It was great that we actually had booked the morning tour and not the afternoon one or even the full day because Marcus was very tired at the end and it would have been too much for him to add a visit of Guadalest village. We had a nice day exploring but there were too many people in my point of view for really enjoying the waterfalls and relaxing. Also the water is really cold. Matt went in easily but I struggled and after a couple of minutes we were freezing so for us 3h was enough.

It looks like the Algar Waterfalls make for a fantastic day out from Benidorm or other Costa Blanca resorts, as they offer something completely different from the beach experience, with beautiful natural surroundings and refreshing waters. I can only imagine how much fun it must be to squeeze in a swim or two in the turquoise waters during those hot summer days. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

Je ne connais pas ce coin mais il a l’air très sympa 🙂 Dommage que l’eau n’ait pas été très chaude et qu’il y ait autant de monde mais ça prouve que le coin était joli.

I’d be with Marcus – I was always the child shivering and refusing to go back in the water!

I am used to swimming in the Mediterranean sea so I also prefer the warm water but in such a beautiful place I made the effort.

Sounds like a fun half day trip and a great way to enjoy the scenery. It’s too bad there were too many people on the trail though and that the water was really cold. Your pictures are really beautiful though.
