Visiting Peebles and the Devil Beeftub – Scottish borders, Scotland

For my birthday this year (17th November) I booked a little cabin with hot tub near Peebles. We drove there (2h30 drive) on the Friday evening and stayed until the Sunday morning. It is a lovely dog friendly accommodation in the middle of the Scottish countryside and I would recommend it. We even saw the sheep from the cabin which occupied Marcus and Skye for a good moment.

On the Saturday morning, we decided to go for a walk in one of the local woods. There are seven woods around Peebles with Glentress being the most famous one. After a quick check on Forestry Scotland, I found that there was a running competition organised that weekend in Glentress wood and that they were estimating to have around 1500 runners, so we thought it would be better to avoid that wood. Instead, we went to Cardrona wood.

Cardrona wood a smaller and quieter than Glentress wood but it is still pretty and offers great views on Peebles. We opted to follow the yellow trail, which is one of the shortest (there are several walking paths) as it was very cold and we wanted to visit Peebles afterwards. The path was very well maintained and signed posted and had a gentle slope. Marcus even managed to walked for a short distance.

After the walk, we drove to Peebles for a little wander in the streets. It was nearly lunch time by then and weather was becoming colder. Peebles center was quite busy with people shopping or going to eat out. We didn’t visit any museums and just took the time to admire the lovely architecture of some of the buildings.

It was now time to go for lunch and we decided to stop at the horseshoe Inn pub in Eddleston, which was near our cabin. We haven’t been to the pub/restaurant for a while now as Marcus is struggling to stay still so we weren’t sure how it would go. He was ok that day and we managed to eat our lunch without running too much after him around the restaurant. Hopefully it will be easier and easier as he grows.

After this delicious meal, we stopped at the nearby Barony Castle hotel to see the Great Polish map of Scotland that is situated in their estate. This map made of rock was created by a group of Polish artists from the university of Krakow during six summers between 1974 and 1979. This map was the idea of Jan Tomaski who was a polish soldier who had been stationed in Galashiels and married a Scottish nurse. He decided to create this map to thank the Scottish people of their hospitality during the war. The map measures 50 metres by 40 metres and represents Scotland mainland and islands with a scale of 1:10,000. I have to say that it is impressive and would recommend if you are in the area.

It was now nearly 4 pm so we decided to go back to the cabin to warm up and have some play time with Marcus. The next morning, the weather was still very cold but sunny. After packing our belongings, we decided to take the scenic route from Peebles to Moffat to stop at the Devil’s beeftub. The devil’s beeftub is basically a little car park by the road with stunning views on the mountain range near Moffat. Again well worth a stop if you are close by. We then joined the motorway at Moffat and drove back home. It was a nice short weekend away in a rural part of Scotland.

  2. Happy belated birthday to you! I too have a November birthday. 😁 Writing a post about our short break away but I sometimes struggle to get motivated. Peebles and the surrounding countryside looks nice. Those trees are so tall in the forest! And Devils Beef Tub is a great name!

    1. Thank you and happy belated birthday.
I know it is sometimes hard with our busy lives to write and also I always feel I am on my phone/ computer in order to read people blogs and write mine. It is a nice area definitely worth a visit. Not sure why the name. Must have a story.

  3. Happy belated birthday! I haven’t been to Peebles but my parents are based in the Borders and I love it up there! Your walks looked lovely, I’d have also opted for the quieter wood – and well done Marcus for getting your steps in 😉

  4. Laurence spends most Saturdays at Glentress/the surrounding area on the mountain bike trails. I’ve only been a couple of times – I hiked the first time, and hired a bike the second – and it is a lovely area. I much prefer it when the weather is warmer though 😅

  5. A little late catching up on blog reading so a belated “bon anniversaire”.
Like Anabel, I’ve walked round the Beeftub. I did it last year on Halloween (but didn’t bump into Owd Nick fortunately) when we had a break in Moffat.
