After a poor spring and summer, the weather during September was actually nice and we managed to do several walks in Cumbria. One saturday morning we decided to drive to Elterwater village to do this famous walk following the shore of Elterwater and then going to Loughrigg tarn.

We arrived around 10:30 am and decided to park our car outside Elterwater village in one of the big car parks as we weren’t sure how busy the village was. It was actually a good move as the National Trust car park in the village was already full. Elterwater village is situated a couple of miles from Ambleside and it also not too far from the famous Langdale Pikes. It is at the same time very remote due to its location and being accessible only by small roads and even needing to drive over cattle grids and at the same time is it very popular with hikers and visitors.

We started walking in the direction of the center of the village, the sun was already shining, which was announcing to be a great day. We took the Cumbria Way to follow Great Langdale Beck. The water was translucent, with a slow current that made us want to stay there for the entire day. Unfortunately, Skye had other plans which involved walking and smelling everything he could so we had to keep going.

The Great Langdale beck then joined the lake of Elter water from which we had a great view on the surrounding summits. Continuing straight, we were now following the river Brathay to arrive at the Skelwith Force waterfall. This little waterfall dropping by around 5m is very lovely and worth the detour. There is a little platform to see it.

Still walking straight, we arrived at Skelwith bridge village, where we took the direction of Loughrigg tarn and left the river Brathay. The walk up to Loughrigg tarn from Skelwith bridge village needed a bit of stamina, especially for Matt who was carrying Marcus. But it went flat again on the edge of Loughrigg tarn. We decided to leave the path to go closer to the shore to have a quick lunch. Marcus and Skye played a bit in the water before lunch. There were several families sitting by the shore of Loughrigg tarn with one or two even swimming. The water was too cold for my liking so I only put my feet in.

After that little break it was time to walk back to the car as we were invited for a late BBQ at our friends. To walk back we decided to pass by Loughrigg Fold, Crag Head and Rob Rash wood. We detoured by the summit of Crag Head to observe the view. We then lost ourselves in a field of high ferns walking down to Rob Rash and had to do a bit of scramble to access the road. After that little adventure, we rejoined the Cumbria Way that we walked to Elterwater village.

It was our first time in this little corner of the Lake District and we will definitely come back. It is such a beautiful and relaxing place.

    1. Oui c’est vrai qu’il peut y avoir beaucoup de monde surtout pendant les vacances scolaires et dans les endroits très connu. Il faut venir hors saison ou alors visiter des endroits du Lake District qui sont moins connus.

  1. We stayed near Skelwith in May, and sorry to say that we didn’t walk around the area at all, which is a mistake by us (trying to complete the Wainwrights instead!). Great to see the area here though. Also like the layout of the post with the side by side text

    1. Thank you for your feedback about the layout.
I hope you will have the opportunity to come back and visit that area.
I found that this is the problem with bagging Wainwrights summits you don’t really see the entire national park but just some summits; however there are so many beautiful valleys to walk.

    1. We are walking everyday close to our house so it is nice sometimes when the weather is good to go a bit further to explore new places.
It is indeed a nice area of the Lake District National Park ☺️.

  2. A good lower level walk with the little fellow, and what a day for it 🙂 I’ve walked along Elterwater (as part of a couple of longer routes) but never got round to visiting Loughrigg Tarn

    1. He absolutely loved it especially playing with our dog in the water at Loughrigg tarn. Water was too cold for me but he didn’t mind having his little feet in it.
Loughrigg tarn is lovely I would recommend it.

    1. I agree it is incredible how clear the water is. We want to explore more around this area. It is a bit of a drive though 😔.
We were lucky with the weather. I like autumn walk with that type of weather.
