Visiting the kelpies and St Andrews area for a weekend – Fife, Scotland

For the bank holiday weekend end of May this year we decided to go to visit St Andrews and the surrounding area.

The long story is that after doing all the paperwork for requesting a new passport in April in London, a month later Matt needed to go to the french consulate in Edinburgh this time to collect his passport. Of course the open days to collect passports meant that he either needed to do the 6h journey by himself in one day or we needed a long weekend. Fortunately they had some availabilities for the Tuesday 28th May, so we could use the bank holiday weekend (Saturday to Monday) and only take the Tuesday off.

With that in mind, I started to look for a home exchange up to max 2h North of Edinburgh. As you might have guessed, I found a home exchange in Tayport between St Andrews and Dundee, which was perfect as we hadn’t been to that part of Scotland before. So here we go to discover it.

The Kelpies

Saturday:

Leaving Cumbria early morning, I had in mind to stop on our way to see the Kelpies and the Falkirk Wheel. However, due to being a bank holiday weekend it was very busy and after waiting a good 30 min to enter the Falkirk Wheel car park they told us that it was full and we had to leave. So still optimistic, we drove to the Kelpies. We also had to wait to park the car but we managed to find a spot. By that time it was nearly 1 pm and we all wanted to eat, so we decided to buy a burger in one of the food trucks present that day on the Kelpies site and to eat while observing these beautiful metallic statues.

The kelpies are two gigantic metallic horse heads, which are actually the largest equine sculptures in the world. They weight more than 300 tonnes each for a height of around 30m. After lunch, we walked around the statues before going for a little walk to the Helix Park that contains a children playground. After that little break, we drove towards Tayport to our house for the weekend.

Sunday:

Weather was awful when we woke up on Sunday morning, so we decided to do a little road trip driving North of Tayport. Crossing the river Tay, we arrived in Dundee, as it was too rainy we decided to take the A92 to drive to Arbroath. Weather was still awful arriving at Arbroath so we continued north to Montrose, where we decided to visit the House of Dun.

House of Dun

House of Dun, which is actually in the Dundee & Angus county is an old Georgian house that now belongs to the National Trust Scotland. There are tours every hours to visit the inside of the house (not dog friendly). There are also the formal garden and the estate to visit with plenty of dog friendly paths. After a quick tour of the shop, we decided to visit the garden before heading to the estate and little forest for a walk. The estate contains huge trees and I have to say it is quite an impressive estate, very lovely for a family walk. After 1h roaming in the estate, we started to be cold so we decided to drive back to see the sea.

The rain had stopped by now, but it was very foggy and we couldn’t see very far. We stopped at Lunan Bay beach, where we ate some sandwiches in the car before going to explore the beach. There is a little walk up the sand dunes to reach the beach. It was very windy and cold so we only played a bit on the beach with Skye. We stopped for a hot chocolate at the tearoom by the car park before deciding to drive home as the rain had started again and even more heavily. On the way we stopped in a strawberry farm to buy some local strawberries.

Monday:

Monday morning weather was still not great so we decided to go visit St Andrews. The rain had stopped but it was very foggy and we couldn’t see far away. We decided to just walk in the city center passing by the cathedral, the pier and little harbour to follow the beach up to the Castle. We then walked through the university of St Andrews campus to observe the beautiful buildings. It was time for lunch so we headed towards the city centre to find a place to eat. We stopped at St Andrews Brewing restaurant which was very nice (dog friendly).

St Andrews Cathedral

The city centre was busy by the time we finished our lunch and it very cold so we decided to drive back to the house. We stopped at Balgove Larder farmshop to buy some local products that Matt and I enjoyed in the evening while Marcus was sleeping.

On the Tuesday morning, we drove back to Cumbria stopping in Edinburgh to collect Matt’s passport and of course we had a beautiful sun the entire drive home. We have enjoyed our little trip to that area of Scotland. We will definitely come back to visit more.

Do you know this area of Scotland? Fancy visiting it?

  1. Looks like you made the best of your time, despite the weather. I haven’t been to this part of Scotland, but I would like to visit. It looks very interesting, especially for a history lover like me!

  2. Ahh typical summer weather there, what a shame. You made a good effort to see things though. I am glad you got to visit The Kelpies. They are so impressive, I preferred them to The Falkirk 🛞 Wheel. X

  3. One of my favorite areas of Scotland. We (husband and three sons) were lucky enough to live for a year in Kirkton of Balmerino, just a stones throw from Tayport in 1996/97. Thanks for the memories! I hope you’ll be able to return sometime when the sun shines…it is magical.

      1. My first proper job after Uni. Our lab was at Watson Street (near Sheet Works) and then we moved up to the Head Office complex. I was there 11 years. Being a Wigan fan I was definitely in the minority 😂

  4. We stopped by the magnificent Kelpies and got up close to these giant pieces of art on our last trip around Scotland, and I was in awe. It is such a beautiful sight to visit – a must for anyone’s itinerary as it can be done as a day trip from Edinburgh or Glasgow. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

  5. I love the Kelpies, but had no idea they weighed that much! Sounds like you made the best of a wet weekend. We did a lovely section of the Fife Coastal Path between St. Monan’s and Pittenweem in August. I don’t think it would be suitable for a pushchair, but it’s otherwise a very family-friendly stretch and might be of interest to you for a future trip up this way 🙂

  6. I’ve been up to that part of Scotland with work but never for pleasure. So interesting to read of your visit. I have seen the Kelpies as we drove past them on the Motorway. Was quite a shock as I wasn’t expecting them.
