Mid-june the weather was a bit undecided in Whitehaven so we decided to drive to Keswick to walk on the old railway line that has been converted into a bicycle/ pedestrian lane. I have been wanting to walk there since it was re-opened In 2020 and beginning of this year reading a walk by Mike from Down by the dougie blog using that railway line motivated me to plot a shorter circular walk.

So that day after parking by the Keswick’s swimming pool, we took the old railway line from its start and walked towards Threlkeld village. The line has been really well renovated and now bicycles, pedestrians and dogs can enjoy it. It is even pushchairs and wheelchairs friendly so perfect for the entire family. The old railway line is mostly flat and has some great views on the surrounding summits and valley. It is a lovely area, very peaceful.

We decided to stay on the railway line until reaching Brundholme, where we took left to join the top of Brundholme wood. It was by now very sunny and even hot and we decided to keep walking through Brundholme wood to join Whinny Brow and the Cumbria Way path towards Keswick. The views were amazing and the fields full of flowers. It was a great day out enjoying the sun.

Have you walked the Keswick old railway line before?

  1. That looks brilliant! I don’t know why more of our old railways haven’t been converted like this. As well as providing nice places to walk, they’d be brilliant for encouraging safe cycling between towns and promoting green travel – don’t know how councils miss this 😂

  2. I have walked along that railway line path into Keswick before, many years ago, 2008 in fact when we stopped at Low Briery for a week. I know it has been updated in recent years, especially since the floods a few years back I think.

  4. A good low level route, that Mélodie. I walked it, with a diversion up Latrigg, on Boxing Day when we were staying in Keswick over Christmas on the only decent day of the holiday. Great views all the way round
