I was planning a day out with our friends Ella and Julian living in Manchester for late February when Shazza from the blog Sunshine and Celantines published a review about the Black Labrador pub in Underbarrow near Kendal. I immediately thought that we should try it as the food looked delicious. Luckily it is located half way between Whitehaven and Manchester which was perfect for us all. Knowing where we will go for lunch what I needed was a walk.
Find Shazza’s restaurant review on her blog.

I asked my colleagues but none of them knew any walks in the area and after some digging in my several books I found a small one that would suit us. I shared my plan with my friends who agreed immediately.

We met at the car park around 10h30. We first walked through a little wood before reaching a dry stone wall and a gate on our right hand side. We passed the gate and arrived in a field with extensive views on the surrounding countryside and Lake District summits in the distance.

The walk was very easy and basically followed the dry stone wall for a little bit before arriving into another field with a more opened view on the countryside. The path was very smooth and gently went up to the cairn where we stopped to enjoy the view.

At the cairn we turned back and use the path closer to Cunswick Scar to walk back to the car park. The drop is very impressive even though there is a forest in the Scar and we couldn’t see the bottom of it.

It took us around 1h30 at a slow pace to do the walk. It is a clearly a family walk with nothing challenging but still a great one to do.

After the walk we drove to the Black Labrador pub in Underbarrow where we had book a table for lunch. The food was delicious. Matt opted for a slow cooked duck leg, while my friend Ella had the halloumi burger and Julian and I had the venison burger with blue cheese. Even Marcus enjoyed the food as he tried all our plates. Definitely worth the detour. Thank you Shazza for sharing this address we will definitely go back with Matt’s parents next time they visit us.

What an expansive view. I loved seeing those stone walls on our travels as it’s something we don’t see around our countryside. Those walls would’ve taken years to build?. Lovely walk and it would be a good one for families, Melodie.

I love the dry stones walls as well they are so traditional of Britain. Unfortunately it is hard now to find people who have skills to fix them.

I was looking for some walks that we could do when arriving in the Lakes, this one along with Scout Scar is in a good spot being to the south east of the Lakes, so on our way in. Will keep this on in mind

You can add it to Scout Scar for a longer walk as it is a small road to cross and you are on the path to Scout Scar if you park at Underbarrow car park.

combining the two is easily feasible

You can’t go wrong with a good pub and this looks a very nice area.
We use an App called Wikilocs for sourcing walks, Melodie, and it sometimes proves very useful.

I have used Wikilocs when I was visiting Tenerife. I am not sure if they do UK as well.
I usually use Visorando or books I have.

Looks like a nice walk Mélodie. Always nice to build up an appetite for lunch! Shazza does seem to have a knack for finding lovely places to stay and eat, I’ve got a Google list with her recommendations!

Always great to finish a walk by a good meal. I also have a long list of places to visit due to reading other people’s blogs.

Both pub and walk look great. I don’t know either, but I remember Sharon going to the Black Labrador with her black labrador.
