Walk around Mellbreak summit – Lake District, England

A very quiet walk around the summit of Mellbreak passing by the valley of Mosedale, Scale Force waterfall and finishing along the shore of Crummock water. This is a dog friendly walk.

  • Distance: 10.8 km
  • Duration: Nearly 4h with breaks
  • Ascent: 196 m
  • Level: Medium
  • Car Park: Lanthwaite Wood National Trust car park (CA13 9UX), Fees applies to non National Trust member
  • Pushchairs friendly: No, we used our baby carrier.
  • Dog Friendly: Yes, no stiles, however no shadow during the whole walk, no water until reaching the shore of Crummock water. Can have sheep in the fields, please keep your dog on the lead.

We started to go back walking in the Lake District’s fells around 1.5 months after having Marcus. We did some little walks during April month but this walk that we did beginning of May was our first long one with him.

That weekend we wanted to enjoy the nice weather (which at the end lasted a good month) and do a local walk as we didn’t fancy driving a lot. Also I was still recovering from my C section so I wasn’t able to walk long distance and I was recommended by the doctor to only do flattish walks for at least 2-3 months. (To be honest steep walks will wait until next summer.)

We like the area around Loweswater, Crummock and Buttermere and after looking at a map we thought why not to try walking around Mellbreak summit. We decided to park at Lanthwaite Wood National Trust and start first walking to Mosedale valley to finish by the shore of Crummock water where we stopped to play in the water with Skye. On the way, Matt decided to do a detour to see Scale Force waterfall. I would like now to do the walk from Buttermere to Scale Force waterfall as the path looks also lovely.

Overall, it was a great day in the fells. The weather was not too hot neither too cold, we didn’t see a lot of people (we met most of the people after reaching Scale Force waterfall) and the walk has amazing views on the surrounding summits. The path through the valley of Mosedale disappears on one side of Mellbreak so a bit of navigation skills is needed. It can also be very muddy but just for this feeling of peacefulness it is worth it. Additionally, there were not too many sheep so Skye was able to run freely most of the walk and swim in Crummock water.
