We did this walk during summer 2022 but unfortunately I didn’t have time to publish it before today (I am now up to date with my blog writing as this walk was the last one I had left to write. I can now start writing all the things we have done since with welcomed Marcus in our life). I had seen road signs indicating this nature reserve during one of our trip in Dumfries and Galloway and I had put it in a corner of my mind to check it once we will be home. One Saturday last august Matt told me that he wanted to go to Gretna outlet shopping center to buy some suits for work and a coming wedding. I was up to go shopping but at the same time I wanted to do a walk with Skye. After a quick google search I found that the shopping center is dog friendly and I remember that I wanted to visit this nature reserve. So a plan was straight created walk in the morning and shopping in the afternoon.

We parked at the car park of the WWT Caerlaverock Wetland Centre. After a quick chat with the lovely women at the wetland centre they confirmed that it was possible to walk with Skye in the nature reserve and up to the old castle (the wetland centre is not dog friendly but the nature reserve on the right of the wetland centre is), which we did. Starting from outside of the Wetland Centre we took the path surrounded by fields to arrive at a bird hide. And after spending a couple of minutes watching the birds, we continued along the marshes up to the forest before turning right to take the direction of Caerlaverock old castle.

Caerlaverock castle comprises a moat, twin-towered gatehouse and battlements. At the time of your visit, it was not possible to visit the castle as they were doing some inspection and renovation works. Caerlaverock castle built in the 13th century, belonged to the Maxwells family from the 13th to 17th centuries. It was then abandoned in the 17th century. This castle is very particular with its triangular shape and has a strong history. It was besieged by the English during the Wars of Scottish Independence and had to be reconstructed several times during the 14th and 15th centuries. It was again besieged in 1640 by the Protestant Covenanter army before being abandoned. Even though it is now in ruin, it is still an incredible castle to see.

After the walk we stopped at the Annandale distillery for a quick lunch before going shopping.

This walk is very nice but there is no shade so I would not advise to do it during a hot day and the castle is definitely worth a visit. If you don’t want to walk you can directly park at the tourist center by the castle. Anabel from the blog the Glasgow Gallivanter also wrote a great article about this nature reserve and castle.

Have you been to Caerlaverock nature reserve or castle?

  1. I’ll make a note about it 🙂 My Dumfries & Galloway road trip planned for summer 2020 was cancelled due to Covid and somehow we never managed to organize it again…
