This walk is actually a combination of two walks that we did during summer 2021 and 2022. Indeed, during the summer 2021, with some friends we went to see the old roman fort of Hardknott. That day was very warm and after walking to the fort, Skye who was only 5 months at the time was very tired to do a long walk so we had decided to shorten the walk and come back another day. Which we did during summer 2022. However this time we didn’t go to the fort but instead went straight to the natural pool of Tongue pot.

Hardknott roman fort dating from Hadrian’s time (between AD120 and AD138) was known as Mediobogdum. The fort overlooking Hardknott pass and surrounded by majestic summits is one of the lonelinest outpost of the Roman Empire. It is still possible to see the ruins of the headquarters building, commandant’s house and bath house.

This walk starts by visiting the fort before going across fields to join the path following the river Esk and reach Tongue pot. The river Esk long of 25km starts in the Scafell range and finishes at Ravenglass Estuary. Near Hardknott pass, the river presents several natural pools with Tongue pot being the most famous one. Some of these pools are deep enough to practise wild swimming and ghyll scrambling. In summer, Tongue pot is crowded and as there is no shade there/along the path it can be very exhausting for dogs. We went during a summer day early morning last summer. By 10 am, we had already swum in the pool and we were starting to walk back to our car as Tongue Pot was starting to be full of people.

It is a lovely walk, unfortunately a bit too popular so it is better to avoid school holiday or go early morning to fully enjoy the peacefulness of the fort and a wild swim in Tongue pot.
