This is actually a walk we did in September 2020. I didn’t have time to write about it before so I am now using my maternity leave to go through all my photos and make sure I catch-up with all the blog posts I had planned to write. I still have a couple from summer 2020, 2021 and 2022 that I need to write.

During the summer 2020, I wanted to build up my strength by walking longer walks. I remembered that I had found this walk in the Country Walking Magazine and I had put on the side with in mind to do it one day as the viaduct seemed gorgeous. That day of September was finally a great day to do it; it was sunny, not too warm or cold and the walk was long and flat perfect for my little training.

South Tyne Trail

After parking at Featherstone bridge, we went in the direction of Haltwhistle village following the river South Tyne. We then crossed Haltwhistle and its lovely bridges to find the South Tyne Trail that we left at Lambley Viaduct. To be honest the trail is a bit boring, the first part of the trail (near Haltwhistle) is a concrete path with no view and no shadow. However, approaching Lambley viaduct the trail passed through a little wood and fields which meant that the walk became more interesting. And of course Lambley Viaduct is incredible. The path arrives at the top of the viaduct and it is on the other side of the riverbank that we were really able to see its splendour. Lambley viaduct long of 260m was originally part of the railway line going from Haltwhistle to Alston. Designed by George Barclay Bruce, it opened in 1852 and closed in 1976. It was then restored in 1996 and opened as a public footpath. The railway station is now a private house. The way back was also very nice as we followed the river South Tyne up to joining the car.

It was a great day out despite the uninteresting section of the South Tyne Trail near Haltwhistle. Lambley Viaduct is definitely worth the visit. There are several car parks closer to the viaduct if you wish to see it without doing the whole walk. I did enjoy this long walk even though I struggled at the end. It is always my feet that are killing me.

  1. The 2 viaducts on the old railway line near Kirkby Stephen are also worth a visit. An easy walk when you have a little one to carry with some good views in places along the disused line

  2. Lambley Viaduct is very impressive, as is Featherstone Castle. I have visited Haltwhistle years ago , I remember it being a pretty little place. Northumberland is such a beautiful part of the country.
