Visiting Hutton in the Forest Historic House and Garden – Cumbria, England

Hutton in the Forest is a historic house with a gorgeous garden near Penrith. The garden is dog-friendly.

This summer we had some friends from France visiting us for a couple of days and during one of the days they were with us we decided to visit Hutton in the Forest Historic House and Garden.

We paid for the visit of the house and the garden but it is possible to pay to only visit the garden. Dogs are allowed in the garden but not in the house, so Matt had to stay with Skye in the garden, while I was doing the guided tour of the house with our friends.

I have to admit that I wasn’t expecting the house and the garden to be that beautiful. The story of the house is so interesting as it comprises so many different architecture from different areas. Indeed, the house has been extended several times and these difference in architecture are clearly visible from the outside of the building. The house dated from circa 1350 and has been modified six times over the past 600 years giving it its particular appearance. The inside is richly decorated with art, tapestries, lighting and I found the colours used in the different rooms quite modern. Not all part of the house can be visited as Lord Inglewood and his family still live in the house.

The wall garden, guarded by massive iron gates, is also incredible. In summer the colours were so vivid and diverse. It was a pure pleasure to walk in its alleys. The estate contains as well a woodland with a pond.

  1. Just beautiful- what a place to call home for the Lord and his family. The gardens are quite how I imagine ‘The Secret Garden’ of the childrens book. Lovely!
