New Lanark town

Last month Matt injured his knee whilst playing football so since then we have not really be able to walk in the fells. So I am using this kind of resting time to look at all the things we did in 2020 and 2021 that I hadn’t had time to publish on the blog.

New Lanark

Last Autumn, we decided to organise a day trip to New Lanark in Scotland. One of our friend moved to Glasgow last year so we have decided to try to meet each other every couples of month somewhere between Glasgow and Cumbria. To be honest we only managed to do it once as every time we tried after that visit to New Lanark, we either had the Covid or my friend had it or the weather was very poor. Hopefully we will soon be able to organise more trips.

River Clyde

New Lanark is an UNESCO World Heritage site since 2001. Situated around 25 miles south of Glasgow, it is an old cotton factory. It was opened in 1786 by David Dale who built the cotton mills and houses on-site for the workers. The site was built on the banks of the Falls of Clyde.

We started that day by visiting the little town of New Lanark before going for a walk along the river Clyde to see the beautiful waterfalls. The buildings making New Lanark are really nice and well maintained. There is a visitor center, which we have not visited as they don’t accept dog in.

The circular path is also well maintained, large and well marked. It is very easy to follow it and the walk is mainly flat. The walk follows both side of the river Clyde and allow to observe the gorgeous Falls of Clyde. It is a very touristy place, especially in summer.

We were very lucky with the weather for a November day it wasn’t too cold and the sun was shining, which allowed us to enjoy this place. I have no words to describe the beauty of this place, especially the waterfalls are breathtaking.

  1. This looks like a lovely spot to go for a hike, especially in the fall when all the leaves are changing colour. I am terrible with navigation so I appreciate a trail that is well marked and easy to follow.

  2. J’adore les couleurs d’automne. Tes photos m’ont rappelé une rando dans le bois à Dunkeld en Écosse, qui a aussi des jolies chutes d’eau.
