Galloway Tourist Route – Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland

Road Trip following the beautiful Galloway Tourist route to discover the Galloway Forest Park.

For this last day of holiday, we decided to follow the Galloway Tourist Route to get back home. This 148 km (92 miles) long road starts from Gretna and goes to Ayr along Galloway Forest Park. Since we were starting from Girvan, we reached it at Dalmellington after passing through the beautiful village of Straiton and taking the B741. The Galloway Tourist Route is very pleasant to drive and allows you to discover the villages bordering the Galloway Forest Park. There are also plenty of places to visit such as the Threave Castle and Garden, or the Dumfries Museum and Camera Obscura. For thrill seekers, the Dalbeattie 7Stanes is definitely the place to stop. While a detour to the Annandale Distillery is a must for whisky lovers.

For lunch, we stopped at Loch Arthur Farm Shop for a delicious sandwich and tea before checking out their organic store.

Taking this route allowed us to end our short stay in the south of Scotland on a high note. But above all, it made us want to explore more the Galloway Forest Park

  2. I’ve been reading a book by a farmer who lives in Galloway “ Native: Life in a Vanishing Landscape” by Patrick Laurie. A look into life in the area and a good read.
I’d also recommend James Rebanks’ latest book “ English Pastoral” . Another good read.
