Visit of Glenkinchie Distillery- Scotland

In this article, I (Matthieu) wanted to share with you an unforgettable experience: the visit of the Glenkinchie distillery. For my 30th birthday, we spent a weekend in Scotland in the region of Dunbar and we took the opportunity to visit this distillery. It is one of six distilleries located in the Lowlands. It produces a very rich single malt Scotch whisky.

The tour of the distillery begins with a visit of the museum relating its history. The museum also contains models that represent all the stages of the whisky production from malting to aging. These models are beautiful and have a real explanatory virtue.

We were lucky enough to have a private tour of the distillery with our guide Alistair because Melodie had booked the Master Experience, which has now been replaced by the Warehouse Experience. Alistair had a strong Scottish accent, but he also mastered French because he had worked in Cognac for a few years, so he offered us to do the visit in French. We finally did the visit in English but took advantage of a prompt translation when something escaped us. The visit was very detailed but also very easy to follow and Alistair took his time to make sure we had asked all our questions. We started along the sheds where the barley was once spread to germinate. Then we passed the old oven where the malt was dried with coal where the different phases of malting were perfectly explained to us. The brewing tanks were then presented to us and then the ones used for fermentation. The size of the tanks is impressive, and the production sheds have retained their charm of yesteryear. At the distillation stage, we were able to observe the two majestic alembics as well as the smaller one needed for the Scottish traditional second distillation. Unfortunately, we did not have access to the aging cellar.

After the visit, Alistair took us to a private room for the tasting. With my Master’s Experience ticket I was treated to six whisky produced by the distillery. While Mélodie was entitled to two whisky with her normal entry. The tasting consisted of two 12-year-old whisky aged in different casks, a single malt, a 24-year-old limited edition and two older cask whisky. The whisky was more or less fruity and we could recognise aromas of citrus, vanilla or red fruit. Alistair took his time to explain how each whisky had been made. The two older cask whisky that are not for sale were definitely the stars of the tasting. One of them had a degree of alcohol of 58.8% with aromas of citrus and spices. The burn of the alcohol felt during the tasting was quite strong, but I still appreciated it.

To summarise, I found that Glenkinchie is a historic distillery that has modernised while keeping a certain charm. The tasting was very complete and good value for money. However, not being an expert in whiskey I struggled to express in words the flavours that I tested, and I would have appreciated a few more tips. In all cases it is a distillery that I recommend visiting and I hope I gave you the wish to taste one of their whisky.
