Since we came back from our holiday early August the weather has been more than mediocre with a lot of rain which prevented us from going for long hikes. Two weeks ago, after spending the Saturday inside the house, I motivated Matthieu to visit Wray Castle. I had seen some pictures of this castle but I did not know much about its history and so I wanted to discover more.

Wray Castle is located south of Ambleside on the west coast of Lake Windermere. Before visiting the castle as the rain was pausing, we decided to go for a walk in the park. A path starts from the castle and goes towards the lake. We followed this trail for a little while through the undergrowth before reaching the dock where the shuttles that go around the lake dock. Then we went back to the castle as the rain started again.

Once in the castle the guides of the National Trust explained that there was a presentation at 11h and another at 12h that spoke about the history of Wray Castle. After visiting the rooms on the ground floor, we headed to the music room where the first presentation was to take place. It was there, sitting in comfortable armchairs that we listened to one of the guides explaining the first part of the story of this incredible castle.

Wray Castle was the idea of ​​the Dawson couple. James Dawson and his wife decided to buy these lands on Lake Windermere for retirement. One winter while they lived in the old mansion, a terrible storm occurred uprooting hundreds of trees in nearby properties. For fear that the same thing will happen again, the couple Dawson decided to build a castle in which they would feel safe. It was therefore in 1847 that Wray Castle was completed after seven years of work and two architects. The first presentation of about 20 minutes stops at the death of James Dawson in 1875.

To know the rest, we had to return at 12h. So, in the meantime, we went to visit the first floor of the castle. Unfortunately, all the rooms of the castle are empty, and this castle is quite modern. There is not much to see but the story told by the guide was very detailed and I would have happily stayed all morning listening the guide talking about this place. There are still magnificent ceilings to see in each room.

Since we did not go to the 12 o’clock session, we did not hear the end of Wray Castle’s story, but some research on the Internet revealed that when James died, the castle returned to his nephew Edward Preston Rawnsley. Then the castle passed through several hands before becoming part of the National Trust in 1929. Apparently, Beatrix Potter had have even spent a summer at Wray Castle. Since 2011, the castle is open to the public with every year new rooms to discover.

Depuis que nous sommes rentrés de vacances début août le temps a été plus que médiocre avec beaucoup de pluie ce qui nous a empêché de faire de longues randonnées. Il y a deux semaines après avoir passé le samedi enfermé dans la maison, je motivais Matthieu pour aller visiter Wray Castle. J’avais vu quelques photos de ce château mais je ne savais pas grand-chose de son histoire et j’avais donc envie d’en découvrir davantage.

Wray Castle est situé au sud d’Ambleside sur la côte ouest du lac Windermere. Avant de visiter le château vu que la pluie faisait une pause, nous décidâmes d’aller nous promener dans le parc. Un sentier part du château et va en direction du lac. Nous avons suivi ce sentier pendant un petit moment à travers les sous-bois avant d’atteindre le ponton où accoste les navettes qui font le tour du lac. Puis nous remontâmes en direction du château vu que la pluie avait repris.

Une fois dans le château les guides du National Trust nous expliquèrent qu’il y avait une présentation orale à 11h et une autre à 12h qui parlaient de l’histoire de Wray Castle. Après avoir visiter les pièces de rez de chaussée nous nous dirigeâmes donc vers la salle de musique où devait se tenir la première présentation. C’est là, assis dans de confortables fauteuils que nous écoutâmes l’un des guides expliquer la première partie de l’histoire de cet incroyable château.

Wray Castle fut l’idée du couple Dawson. James Dawson et sa femme décidèrent d’acheter ces terres en bordures du lac Windermere pour y passer leur retraite. Un hiver alors qu’ils vivaient dans l’ancienne mansion, une terrible tempête se produisit déracinant des centaines d’arbres dans les propriétés avoisinantes. Par peur que la même chose se reproduise, le couple Dawson décida de se faire construire un château dans lequel ils se sentiraient plus en sécurité. C’est donc en 1847 que Wray Castle fut achevé après 7 ans de travaux et deux architectes. La première présentation d’environ 20 min s’arrête à la mort de James Dawson en 1875.

Pour savoir la suite, il nous fallait revenir à 12h. Nous allâmes donc visiter le 1^er étage du château. Malheureusement toutes les pièces du château sont vides et celui-ci assez moderne. Il n’y a donc pas grand-chose à voir mais l’histoire conté par le guide était très détaillée et je serais resté volontiers toute la matinée à écouter ce guide parler. Il y a tout de même de magnifique plafonds à voir dans chaque pièce.

Vu que nous ne sommes pas allés à la session de 12h nous n’avons pas entendu la fin de l’histoire de Wray Castle mais quelques recherches sur Internet révélèrent qu’à la mort de James, le château revient à son neveu Edward Preston Rawnsley. Puis le château passa entre plusieurs mains avant de faire partie du National Trust en 1929. Apparemment Beatrix Potter aurait même passé un été à Wray Castle. Depuis 2011, le château est ouvert au public avec chaque année de nouvelles pièces à découvrir.
