Mellbreak is one of the most famous peaks in the Loweswater Valley. Its silhouette stands out from the landscape and welcomes the travellers to this region. Every time we passed by, Mellbreak reminded us that we had never climbed to the top of its summit. So at the end of June, we decided to do a hike passing by Mellbreak and the shores of Crummock water. This hike presents no particular difficulty because the path is clearly visible, wide and well-maintained. Only the climb to the top of the first summit can be a little difficult because the path is only rocks and is quite slippery. Like all the peaks of Lake District the view from the top is simply breathtaking. Crummock and Buttermere Lakes are appeared at the feet of the hikers. That day the weather was nice, so we stopped for a swim in Crummock Lake at the end of the hike.

Here are the key steps to do this hike:

  • From the car park, head for Loweswater Village and Kirstile Inn Pub. Take the road going down the pub and continue straight ahead. Go past the cottages and continue straight on the path.
  • At the level of the forest, take the path on the left that goes up and passes through it. Continue straight towards the first summit. Once up continue on the trail towards Mellbreak.
  • At the top of Mellbreak, continue straight on the path that goes down to Loweswater Fell and Black / Scale Beck.
  • At the river turn left on the trail towards the edges of Crummock Water. Then again left once at the edge of the lake. Follow the trail along the lake for a long time until you reach the end of Crummock and pass the locks. Then take the path on the left and follow it until you reach the car park.

Have you walked to Mellbreak summit?
