The other weekend while Matthieu was in Dublin for his friend’s stag do, I went to visit my friend Ella in Manchester. On Saturday the weather was not too bad so we decided to go for a hike near Oldham.

I did not know this place at all and it was a pleasant discovery. The Dovestone Reservoir is quite popular but the walk we did was not too busy especially the first part up to the Chew Reservoir. This hike is quite easy as the trail climbs slowly and is wide and visible. There are just two parts, once at the top of the plateau when you have to cross twice the stream, where you have to be careful because it is slippery and it’s close to the void. From the top of the plateau, the view of the Dovestone Reservoir is magnificent.

Here are the key steps to do this hike:

  • From the parking, take the road that goes to the right just after the toilet. Continue straight on this road until you reach a hamlet of houses. Go past the houses and continue straight on the path until you reach a second hamlet.
  • On the second hamlet, take the path slightly above the previous one that goes towards the Dovestone Reservoir. Continue straight on the path until you reach the paved road. Take a right on this road towards Chew Reservoir.

  • At the Chew reservoir, turn left and continue a few meters along the dike before taking the path on the left that goes through the plateau. Continue on this trail for a long time, cross two small streams before you see a path on the left that goes down to the Dovestone Reservoir.
  • Take this path to the reservoir, then pass between the two reservoirs and then left through the forest. Continue straight to the parking.

Do you know this hike?
