Walk Dun Muir and Carn Mor by Ladders steps, Cairngorm, Scotland

Great walk in the Cairngorm National Park to Dun Muir and Carn Mor by the Ladders steps. This is a remote walk that requires good navigation skills.

For this third day in Scotland, we decided to do a small road trip before joining the start of our hike. From our BnB located in Bellabeg / Strathdon, we took the direction of Glenkindie, then Mossat, then Rhynie and Dufftown. Then we drove to Glenlivet and Tomnavoulin. This road that runs through the Speyside area and offers wonderful views of the Scottish countryside is best known for its many whisky distilleries (about fifty) such as Glenfiddich, Glenlivet and Tamnavoulin.

After a short tour of the area by car, we set out on a 16 km hike from the village of Chapeltown. This small village lost in the countryside is home of the Braeval distillery. This distillery created in 1973 is now part of the Chivas Brothers group. Located 350 m above sea level it is the highest distillery in Scotland. Unfortunately, it is not open to the public.

There are several hikes to do in the vicinity of this village, you will find more information on the Glenlivet Estate website. This one we found it on the Walkhighlands website which lists a lot of hikes in Scotland. I always look at this website to find my hikes in Scotland.

This hike is little known, and we met only one person along the way. But this did not bother us as we saw many birds and rabbits instead. This hike is quite difficult because of the steep ascent but also the lack of visibility of the trail once on the plateau. There is not really a path down to Scalan. It is therefore necessary to know how to navigate to find the way. Other than that, this hike is great, and the view at the top is just beautiful.

Here are the steps to do this hike:

  • From the car park, leave towards the farm and cross it. Continue on the path along the small forest. Pass the gate and continue straight towards the house and cross the stream. Just after, take the path that goes to the right towards the centre of the two peaks;
  • The trail begins to climb on the side of the hill. Continue straight ahead to the top of the summit. Then turn right towards Dun Muir. Continue towards Càrn Mòr, it is from this moment that the path is not very visible. There are white sticks planted in the ground that indicate the direction and you will have to follow them to reach the top of Càrn Mòr;
  • Continue straight towards Càrn Liath but before reaching it turn right towards Tom Trumper. Before arriving at Tom Trumper, go down to the old village of Scalan. Continue towards the parking.

Do you know the Speyside area? Have you ever done this hike?

  1. A good walk on a fine day.
    your photos make me want to go there myself but The Highlands are outside my normal range. I really need to get up there while I’ve still got legs that would have a chance of coping.

      1. I don’t do too bad for someone getting older. Perhaps another 10 plus years before I’m not up to it. But time just seems to whiz past.
        So many places to walk yet so little time to do it. I envy your youth 😉

  2. That scenery is amazing. I quite like it when I’m out hiking and I don’t see many people; it’s good to be with your own thoughts and the landscape sometimes. We drove through this area on our way to the Orkney Islands a few years ago, I’d love to get back and explore.

  3. Wow, just look at all the beautiful photos from the park. I’ve been to Scotland many, many times, but somehow never made my way to Cairngorms National Park. Given its stunning scenery, variety of wildlife and all the amazing attractions, I have to put it on my travel wish list. Thanks for sharing and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx
