Walk Cat bells, Lake District, England

A lovely walk to Cat Bells summit, which is one of the easiest Wainwright summits to do. It is perfect for a family day out; however during summer months this walk is very popular.

Last saturday we finally decided to go Cat Bells after having heard some much about this little summit. At first, we wanted to do a bigger loop that goes through Cat Bells then Maiden Moor and High Spy but because we started this hike quite late and there was some snow, we thought it was more cautious to shorten it and keep the longer one for summer days. Some people compare Cat Bells to a motorway because it is really popular as it’s a fairly easy hike for the whole family and it is close to the village of Keswick. I can confirm that there is a lot of people going to the top of Cat Bells but the view from the summit is worth braving the crowd and I can say that I enjoyed this little hike. With the sun and the snow, the view was even more fantastic. The trail is wide and goes up for about 1.5 km. The climb can be a bit long for beginners, but it is not that hard. The descent is a bit steeper especially when there is ice as there was last saturday. Once down, the path back to the car is almost flat

Here are the key steps to do this walk:

  • From the car park take the trail that goes to the top of Cat Bells (signpost indicating Cat Bells 1 miles, 1h). Follow it to the top of Cat Bells.
  • Once up continue straight ahead towards Maiden Moor. Then before the climb take the path that goes down on the left. Follow the path to the bottom.
  • At an intersection of paths turn left. Follow this path to the car park.

Have you been to Cat Bells before? Do you like walking in the snow?

  1. Superbes paysages!
